Interview & Shop Visit: Steve Lamson and Xyience / MDK / Honda

Steve Lamson had a 17-year career as a full-time racer, and took home two National Number One plates aboard Hondas in the 125 class during the '95 and '96 seasons.

Over his career he rode for DGY, Team Honda, and Mazda Chaparral Yamaha before starting his own team in 2000. He also had later stints with the Fast by Ferracci Husqvarna squad, as well as ECC Suzuki, and Motosport.com, before hanging up his helmet in '05.

Last May, though he had minimal time to prepare due to a broken wrist suffered at the World Mini, he came out of retirement at Hangtown and scored a 17th in the muddy second moto, taking home enough points keep his AMA permanent number six for another year.

But…all that was before landing his newest gig as Team Manager with the Xyience / MDK / Honda team. Now he gets to watch over other riders, including last year's top privateer, Nick Wey; Frenchman turned Californian, David Vuillemin, and this summer, their most recent addition to the team, Drew Gosselaar.

Check out the two videos, and you can find out how Steve got where he is, who his influences are among the team managers he rode for, and his racing plans for the future. In the second video, he conducts a tour of the MDK Motorsports facility, so you can see where these guys live at between races.

The water tanks on the MDK rig are disquised as Xyience Energy cans.

Lounges in most big rigs are actually pretty snug, once you add in a couple riders, plus coaches, managers, etc. The MDK rig features a pop-out that boosts the interior room considerably. It used to be that privateer teams had hand-me-down rigs. Not so with this one.

Last year's top privateer, Nick Wey. Privateer teams aren't what they used to be. In some cases they actually seem like better spots to be in.

DV's mechanic, Brent Myron, finishes preppping the swingarm before reinstallation. Check out the neat rows of titanium hardware. Just one suggestion...don't mess with any of Brent's stuff. He'll probably intimidate you with a giant pair of tin snips.
