Just read a post on Mark's Vintage Swapmeet that he has died. Anyone have any information on this? I think he would have been about 70 years old. Hard to believe.

Adolf Weil died one week ago in his hometown Solingen/Germany at the age of 72. He was one of the best German Motocrosser and called "the smoothest rider" . 14 times German Champion, Vice World Champion and Trans AMA Champion in 1973, all on Maico., raced with Roger de Coster, Bengt Aberg etc.. Remember watching him racing the World Championship in Bielstein in the seventies.

Rest In Peace

Anyone who had a bike named after them definitely was moto royalty. The AW Maicos were some of the most beautiful pieces of machinery ever. RIP.

Here is another pic from him. I think its just BADASS. Look how close the spectators were in these old times!
On this picture you see him battle with former world champion Paul Friedrichs (East Germany on a CZ)

I agree with Newman. I have also said the same thing about the AW Maicos. As a kid in the 70's, I remember siting and admiring my Dad's AW and how beautiful it was.

I am also very sorry to hear about Adolph's passing. He seemed to live a rather quiet existence after his racing days, and I am sorry that we didn't get to hear more from him about a great period in MX history.

RIP

Such a bummer. Growing up in Germany, I spent a year traveling the GP's with Adolf and my Dad when I was just a kid.

dear user of this board,

thank you for your condolences and for all your kind comments!

My father in law was born Dec 25 in 1938 and died May 12 this year.
His dead was absolutely unexpected, he was in good constitution and stood
in his business until his last day. He wanted to retire at the end of this year to
go on some vacations.
We still have not realized that he is definitely not with us anymore and can't do,
what he planned to do.

After his career he opened a motorcycle-business in 1975 and focused
completly on his new profession, selling Maico and Kawasaki-Motorcycles.
His two sons, Frank, born in 1959, and my husband Jürgen, born in 1960, helped him from
the beginning and are still running the company

Of course he did sports, he played tennis and he loved sailing very much.
Unfortunately his wife Heike died, much too young, in 2002 in the age of only 60.

We need time to sort out some nice pictures, to fill the empty spaces in wikipedia
and other websites, so he will never be forgotten!

If you have more pictures or videos, they are highly appreciated! Thank you so much,

kind regards, Sonja

All the best to your family. It was a privilege to get to see him ride. He was a great rider, and a great ambassador to the US of the sport and the Maico brand.

He was my very first motocross hero! Fantastic career and a fantastic human being. He was the smoothest rider to ever grace a motocross track. He cemented my love affair with Maico's, for sure.

Good speed Alolf Weil. It was an honor to watch you race.

Ms. Weil,

Your father -in-law was a super star in the minds of many young up and coming racers. Me included.

I've watched him race at Unadilla and later was on the track with him before he retired.

Here is a repost of a fond Weil memory:

"From Vital 12/20/2008 12:21 PM Law 131 wrote:

It was the 1970s. The famed and revered Unadilla race had concluded. Awards given and the pits were being emptied.

My mechanic, cousin and I, were leaving. We found ourselves in a confrontation with another driver. His team was unknown as we jockeyed for position, cutting each other off and blocking others as we drove for route 8 to get out of the Unadilla pits.

After several cut offs and much consternation we found ourselves squared off in front of a wild blue eyed man! My cousin yelled out, that’s Weil! Cut his ass off!

We did, and raced him the way up to Utica where we broke off onto route 12 and he grabbed the NY State thruway to where ever.

Racing always continued on with Weil well after the FIM event was over.

Good times!!

PS One of the Chezks borrowed my pit board for the GP. They were pitted next to us in a Uhaul and had next to nothing for tools/equipment."

Godspeed Weil.

RIP Adolf !

Ms. Weil;

I just spoke to my father, Stuart Peters, also 72, he raced against your father-in-law in the 60's in Europe, he said he had pictures, results and articles with Adolf in them, I'll get them together and forward them on to you as well. Sorry for your family's loss.
