Not confident of my 08 RMZ 250

6/7/2012 8:53pm Edited Date/Time 6/8/2012 2:35pm
I have ridden MotoCross since 1971. Needless to say my machines were always 2 strokes Suzuki's. In 08 I surrendered to the hype about 4 strokes and bought and 08 RMZ250. Great looking bike, its like riding a 2X 6 piece of lumber, still a nice bike.
One draw back, maintenance on it has cost me more in 4 years than my 1998 RM-125 has in 14 years....and I can turn a faster lap on my RM-125. If I could turn back time to 08, I would have taken the $6380 OTD on the RMZ and bought the 08 RM-250 2 stroke. I would be a much happier Vet rider on the 2 stroke, much more awake and excited. I kind of compare 4 stroke to Nascar's , and 2 strokes to Formula One cars. I like the acceleration not to mention the 2 stroke affordability.
Not trying to start any problems, just my opinion. I'd might even trade my like new stock low hour (4 hours) 08 RMZ-250 straight across for an 08 RM-250 that was in the same like new stock shape and low hours.

I hate to say it, but the owner of the '08 (they still had one then?) RM250 wouldn't trade you.
6/7/2012 9:07pm
Yep, thats what I thought and I hate to think it..... What was I thinking when I bought that RMZ..... Dag nabbit !! I suppose

there is nothing like regret to remind one they are alive. LOL ! I guess I'll just relish in the fact that my RM-125 has never

failed me once, unlike my RMZ. I never give up, so there will be a 2 stroke RM-250 in my near future. After 41 years of

riding, I cant let a 4 stroke dull my MX lifestyle. Carry on.......

if you've only ridden 4 hours in the last 4 years, how the heck did you spend anything on maintenance?

so what your saying is that u have thousands of dollars tied up in maintnence in 4 hrs of maitnence on your 2008? sounds like bullshit to me...i had a 2007 and 2008 rmz250 i sold both with over 140hrs on them original cranks and valves each had 2 pistons and 2 clutches.....i am currently on a 2008 rmz 450 and that has been flawless too ....vet b rider....

I have ridden the bike about 8 times in that 4 years, usually a couple of 15 min. or a 30 minute session each time out. Between the popping and sometimes not wanting to start, I have spent a bit to get it sorted out. Go thru the carb etc.... I must admit this could also have been bad gas and not so much the bikes fault. Although It still falls on my wallet. I have ruined my right Tech 7 Boot sole trying to start the durn bike, LOL ! gotta replace those soon, boots arent cheap. Anyways... The bike runs fine now but I hate the thought of something going wrong that I cannot afford or fix myself. I am just an old 2 stroke dude and its hard to change that part of me after this many years. I can do most any repair on a 2 stroke if I have to which is reassuring. I'm just too old and set in my ways to have a love affair with this RMZ, the luv just aint there. Some guys like certain kind of girls, I like em that put oil in their gas. Dont tell my wife I said that.....yikes !!!

Yes, still have the 125, and your right, it is alot of fun.
and the 94 KX250 pictured in my Avatar for 2 years. (without any mechanical problems!)Smile

I love to hear that, no mech. problems. The 1998 RM-125 has also been so reliable. Congrats on your KX.

Sounds like you bought a lemon. 4 hours is bugger all. Seems like a bit of a troll thread IMO

The 4-strokes have a different feel and do require a different style of riding. Before you sell it, you should put some more hours in on it - you may just not be used to it yet. It is probably just the modern styling and ergo's that make it feel like a "2x6 plank of timber."

If the RMZ has cost you more in maintenance with only 4 hours on it, the 14 year old 125 must be in a sorry state. That comment sounds like a large exaggeration to me. Despite what "the taliban" on here say, 4-strokes usually require less engine maintenance than 2-strokes. It's just that if they blow up, they can cost an awful lot to fix. If you are a reasonably competent mechanic, you should be able to service the engine on the 250F - they are not as complicated and difficult to work on as many think. Just be observant as you take it apart, and use the owners manual to help you put it back together.

Comparing Formula1 cars to Nascars is like comparing dirt bikes to quad's - There is NO comparison! 4-strokes are exciting to ride once you start to push them and use their strengths to your benefit. They are much easier to ride fast than two strokes for most riders also.

I am a longtime Suzuki guy as well and had always ridden 2-strokes until switching to my current 2011 RMZ450. My previous bike was actually a 2008 RM250. Both are good bikes and have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Give the 250F a chance before you kick it to the curb! Good luck.

Sound's to me like you have the perfect candidate for an AF conversion, and it's legal in vet class. you've got everything you need, right now, at your disposal. Put it together, then eBay everything that's left over. And you're old, so you have patience on your side. You'll recoop a lot of your cost buy selling that low hours 250F engine on ebay.

Or you could just sit on it for another year, and wait for the 2014 RM125s to come out.

sam111 is right, 250Fs are great bikes... great PARTS bikes.

Let be the first to come out and say it.......bullshit.

We bought my kid a 2007 RMZ250....used for $2,000.
He raced it for 2 years, practiced on it as well....his only bike.

We spent money on clutch and tire stuff, oils etc, had the valves checked twice and once they needed adjustment.
Maybe dropped $800 total over the 2 season including tires.
That bike kicked over everytime, most times after a couple short compression builders and then one kick.

Sold the bike 3 months ago......for $2,000

So please.....if you just wanted to shout "I love 2 strokes!!" from the rooftop.....feel free.....I love them too.
Spare us the trolling thread and the BS story.

You are so full of it dude. How does this make sense "I like to compare 4 strokes to NASCAR....2 strokes to formula 1.....then you go on to say two strokes are cheaper, new flash boss f1 is bookoo bucks. If two strokes accelerate so much harder then why have supercross gotten so much bigger since the use of four strokes?

Your whole story seems to be made up to me....just to get a bj from the Taliban, anyone who actually rides knows you are full of shit.

geez you dont have to rip him apart..

that being said, that rmz is one of the most reliable bikes ever. you may have been to anxious to drop money on a problem that isnt there.Ive worked for a Suzuki dealer for 7 years and have barely sold any parts for any rm or rmz, they are all bulletproof.

if you dont like the bike, just sell it, buy a newer 125 (and you'll probably have enough left to go through it)

Had the bike been rebuilt by the previous owner before you got it. If so, maybe he rebuilt it right. Sometimes the factories get in a hurry, if you know what I mean.

Don't blame you. Up until 2010, the RM-Z has had a slow motor and been big.. But these new RM-Z's are a different story. The motor shreds, the cornering is like no other, the handling is amazing. Best bike I have ridden. My lap times improved on that bike right away. It feels like I am riding a two stroke as far as flickability goes. Just have to be mindful of those transmissions on the new ones. They are the worst out there.

who exactly are you, and what exactly is your fucking problem? I read your posts, and I see nothing but a disgruntled old guy who has a friend who is friends with a friend of Doug Dubach's highschool prom date, so this makes you an "insider".

What exactly classifies my posts as "worthless"? Go ahead and articulate it, Grape Ape and let the keyboard be your rifle, and the english language your bullet.
