In case you guys haven't seen this, I interviewed Ryan a while back for a retrospective on his career on RedBull.com. I had him look back on a bunch of photos I took of him over the years and comment on that specific moment and also the general time in his career.

I was really impressed with his ability to recall the exact race each photo was taken and specific moments that occurred. Ryan really was and is a great representative for the sport.

The last pick and Dungey talking about it. Has to be one of the most epic rides every in motocross. This is not just coming from a bad start, or falling down in the first turn. This was getting to the first turn seconds before the lead rider crosses on the first lap.

Think about rides like that and it was something special to be able to watch Dungey these past years, the image of him shifting with his hand at the MEC should always be iconic, up there with Hannah hanging off the side of his bike while flying through the air!

Always giving his 100% effort and that's what I like about the guy. There's a lot of times he could have easily said screw it I'm pulling out of this race but he just dug deeper and found a way to make things happen.

The shifter issue comes to mind, the race with the Suzuki where he was almost a lap down, finished a race with a broken neck, etc.

A lot of riders could learn a thing or two from him.

An complete and total badass. Never gave up in the face of adversity, trained his ass off, was always in a good mood it seemed and willing to talk to fans. Genuinely a great person and a champion that the sport will miss for a long time to come

Glad y'all like it. A little background on how this interview came about:

After Dungey announced his retirement, I began thinking of this idea for an article. I had not spoken directly with Ryan in a few years and probably hadn't texted him in 7 or 8 years since I was at TransWorld. So, I just threw it out there; sent the text not even sure if he still had the same number. I told him the idea and he was onboard and even apologized for taking a little while to reply, not that it was necessary.

I was pretty surprised to be honest that he was up for it, but once we got on the phone it was the same old Ryan; friendly and genuine. We spent the first 20 minutes just catching up and talking about family. Compared to other athletes with his level of success, you would think he's just another guy, but he's not. He's one of the most successful motocross racers ever, but he seems to never have forgotten where he came from.

Given all the adversity he faced in his final SX season this year (mentally of course), I wonder how we would have gone with a clear head ala 2015-16? Would the championship have still been as close as it was? Was Tomac that good or was Dungey's head holding him back a notch?

Edit: Great article. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks BS12!

I think Ryan knew he was going for the championship the whole time. Once Tomac picked up his speed it was all about just staying as close to the front as possible. Those last few races (and I think more so Tomac's flub in NJ vs Musquin's controversial move) showed Dungey's strength as a competitor and Tomac's need to mature a bit as a racer.

Forgot Dungey was only 10 pts. behind Villo half-way through the 2012 SX season.

Good read!

Great read, you should do that with all the riders. Just show them random pictures and get their immediate reactions and emotions from it.
