That was my best guess. The mud build up around the linkage could catch the ring around the bumper cup as it's pretty low on that bike. If it built up enough to compress the ring during a deep stroke movement, it could disslodge the retaining clip and release the spring when the shock goes to extend.

When I changed the spring on my '18, I was not impressed with how little was keeping the spring on the shock. Just doesn't seem strong enough to my untrained eye.If anything better in the aftermarket comes out I will buy it.

Is a Factory KYB the same as the stocker..??

I have never seen or heard of that ever anywhere else, im guessing either the groove for the clip was too deep, or the wrong wire dia , meaning it blew past it and then it fell off.

Anyway, it wasnt a clevis/ shock failure.

On one hand it seams funny to have it happen in both motos but on the other hand we really haven't had a thick mudder like that sense that bike/shock combo has been out. (Unadilla was more wet than muddy I was there) but I would like to know if a whole new shock was mounted second motor or did they just put a new clip on the first failed one. On any note it sucks balls for Cole and the team.

It is a factory shock which is likely built to Hondas specs, so unlikely any other bikes in the MXdN field have it. Certainly no reported failures on bikes you buy off the showroom floor.

No other Honda out there had the failure so I wouldn't blame the bike. Could be a specific part that only the US team was using or technician not assembling parts correctly.

I can remember back in the day when safety wire was used to secure most parts. Not sure if it would apply or would have prevented this shock part failure. Made Honda and HRC look really bad not once but two times in a row. I bet some people are no longer with the company. Cole Seely is lucky he did not get injured because of this stupid failure. It is amazing how a very inexpensive part failure can do so much damage. I have seen it many times before in motor sports. Sucks to be HRC having to explain to the top Honda brass the meaning of "WTF".

My '96 rear shock held up great today at the pro challenge. Perhaps we should show up 2 strokes to make a "Shocking" impact on results.

Would have never ever guessed that a HRC bike would ever have a failure like that once let alone TWICE!!

HRC with their thousand dollar foot pegs, perfect wire tying and dozens of clear protective stickers so nothing wears on the anodised parts... Seems like a real rookie error...

Stuff happens, anyone racing long enough knows that. It does look bad on HRC to have the same problem back to back. Hate it for team USA... At least he had the balls to try...

To be honest it takes a bit of heat off of him how he had selected reverse gear. He looked out of his depth which for a factory rider isn't good.
I like Seely but since roczens injury he's performed less stellar

And technically, it wasn't a Honda fault, just a proprietary part supplied to the team. They just bolt it on.

Having measured literally hundreds (maybe even thousands) of circlips , and there associated grooves and mating parts , its possible that even a slight error in one , two or all 3 parts will give a failure.

I would expect that KYB use a standard clip, so a fault in the other two parts is possible, groove too deep in the clevis is my favourite.
