I realize this is unknown at this time but the SR-71 started development almost 20 years before many really knew of its existence. It seems that there is too much smoke to deny that an Aurora like plane isnt out there. Current theory is saying it to be around mach 8 upwards of 8 thousand mph (of course some sort of SCRAM). Not so sure about all that but there are satillite con trails that are visible from Nevada to Russia and China. The pulse wave con trail is continous and suggests a speed of around 8K MPH. Any thoughts?

Good topic ,unfortunately, anybody who knows for sure can't say.

I remember the SR71 Blackbird just for the fact that it lost fuel while on the ground and prior to flight because the structure expanded so much at altitude and at Mach 3 that the leaks were eliminated due to expansion of the airframe.

Just think, Mach 3 was achievable in the 60's, and that was when it was produced. We have since made many major strides in aerodynamics, engines etc. No reason to not believe we have capabilities to go Mach 8 or better 50 years later.

I know we got some guys here with flight experience , would it even be possible for a human being to function as such a high speed?

Since g-forces diminish at altitude, not sure what g-force's are at speed in altitude that would keep someone from functioning.

Any rocket scientist's on this board? lol

The leaking of the SR-71 has always beem fascinating to me.

Your last paragraph is exactly what II think. For instance, look at the development of an SR-71 only 50 years after flight was acheived at all. So, it really isnt a stretch to think that 50 years after the SR-71 that huge jumps in technology have happened and wejust dont know what those changes are.

Im not the scientist you are looking for but I would imagine that the space shuttle travels faster than 8K to get into orbit. So the technology exits. Just dont know if that technology is applicable to planes. I meant to quote Mr. X.

Edit: Forgot to add, that as far as I know the plans for planes that fly at that speed are unmanned.

There is no relationship between G forces and altitude. As far as Aurora... airplanes are obsolete as far as reconnaissance goes.

Drones are planes and they are used for reconnaissance.

Not trying to argue, just trying to understand.

Really?

"Gravity changes with altitude. The gravitational force is proportional to 1/R2, where R is your distance from the center of the Earth."

"Gravity decreases with altitude as one rises above the Earth's surface because greater altitude means greater distance from the Earth's center. "

Gs are a measurement of acceleration. Earths gravity happens to be be measured at 1G at the surface. Yes, Earth's gravity is less the farther away from earth you get but that really has nothing to do with the measurement. If you are in space and you kick on your rocket engine you will generate x number of Gs.

No, you are absolutely correct. My bad. Smile But SR71/Aurora type of recon planes are pretty much obsolete with satellite technology of today.

As long as it takes to get a new plane, the design could already be outdated. I would imagine the project started way before satellite usage became so efficient.

BTW, I think lockheed has named the craft the SR72.

Nice try to recover from your previous statement of fact that was incorrect. But doubling down on your second statement of fact is still incorrect so we'll just leave that there....

??? Neither of my statements of fact are incorrect. They are both statements of fact. Smile The number of Gs an aircraft pulls has really nothing to do with Earth's gravity. It has to do with thrust, with centrifugal force, etc. The altitude an aircraft is above the Earth and the reduced gravity of the Earth at that altitude has nothing to do with the acceleration forces of an aircraft. Now, the reduced density of the air would in fact have an effect on the number of Gs an aircraft can pull in a turn however because the amount of deflection force a wing and its surfaces can generate would be diminished in an air mass that is less dense.

Kelly Johnson who designed the SR-71 in the late 50's for Skunk Works (Lockheed) was a genius back in his day much like Howard Hughes.

The Blackbird was way ahead of its time and is one of my favorite aircraft to this day.

The aircraft they fly out of Area 51 would be a sight to see. Woohoo

SR71 is my favorite plane as well. I got to see them fly and see them up close and have buddies who crewed them. I only worked on lowly F-16s, F-4s, and A-10s. Several of my A-10 buddies actually worked on the very first F-117s up in the desert (Area 51) and they couldn't tell anyone about it until they released the info. I worked with them a couple of years before the F117 was released to the public at which time they were able to talk about it. Pretty cool stories. I had the wing commander's plane at Myrtle Beach for a while and our wing commander was Sandy Sharpe, who also happened to be the first commander of that secret F117 squadron up in the desert.

Very cool Void. Smile

I was really bummed when they decommissioned the Blackbird but I guess the cost of operating it turned out to be too much.

I also have some friends that had some stories as well.
One worked at Lockheed on the F-117 and another guy who worked at Burbank Airport. ( that is where Skunkworks existed, in Burbank).

He would tell me in the middle of the night they would shut down the airport and with guards all around the C-117 Transport Aircraft they would load a mysteriously cloaked aircraft into it and probably take it up to Area 51 for test flights. Woohoo

What is funny about the SR is that they were brought back after they were decommissioned nat one time.

The initial naming was RS71. Somewhere along the way it was labeled as the SR 71 and it just stuck

Can you imagine what people back in the late 50's and 60's would do if they saw the SR-71?

Hahaha. Smile

Yeah,I'd assume it's responsible for some "UFO sightings". Smile

No telling what kind of stuff they have in the works (classified) these days as far as manned aircraft goes.

I think that its no coincidence that around the time of development of the SR and others, UFO sightings started taking off.

Uh, AHRMA, you ever heard the quote, "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than speak and remove all doubt."?

Void is right on.

Now, let's talk about seat bouncing....

This must be the type of thing my grandpa was talking about. He flew for the air force from the 60's-80's and I remember him talking about some aircraft that would just kind of "appear" on base at night. That's about the extent of what he would say.

G force is just a measure of force gauged by the force exerted by gravity resting at ground level, right?

That was my guess. The SR-71 provided the ability to get somewhere QUICK, to get photos.

With as many satellites as there are now, is there any square inch of the earth that is not under constant "observation"?

Yeah, but sometimes you need to build a works bike to prove you can
