Still don't have my 1976 Yamaha YZ125 and 1983 Yamaha YZ490 where I want them, but I have taken on rebuilding a 1981 Yamaha YZ465.

I was going to make it into a Marty Moats replica, but now I am thinking about making it into a nice Blue and White Keystone bike like George Quays Yamaha YZ250.

I think I will start with the Motor rebuild and figure it out from there. Anyone else out there restore one these? Any important tips?

Thanks

Thank You for that information. I have a 1982 YZ490 bottom end left over so that works out great.

Juiced about this project.

I think the shifting forks are soft. I have 465 bottom ends and the forks are worn. A 490 bottom witht he same issue. I think that causes false neutrals and gear problems. But then again we are dealing with 30 year old motorcycles.

I chose to make the 1981 Yamaha YZ465 a Marty Moates replica. The George Quay KEYSTONE replica would of been so sweet, but I think Marty deserves this replica.

Most likely the engagement dogs on the gears have rounded allowing the gears to jump out of each other. I'm talking thte 3~4 tabs on the back of the gear that fit into the slots on the next gear. In a pinch I have ground them square again and reused the gear until a replacement could be found.

Thats what I see. I think it is the shifting forks wear and then the sloppiness causes the wear on the dogs.

There are lots of good tranny parts all over the web for a low price. There are lots of YZ465 parts out there in general. Thing that I see it that some minority few place their parts up at such a high price and even though the parts are not selling they will not lower the price.

I am kicking myself for missing a perfect Gas Tank for $25.

Looking for a Left Case with no cracks at the moment for a low price.

Most of the Marty Moates replicas that I have seen don't have Yellow Lower Fork Legs (I have seen one with them online). Yesterday I spent time cleaning the Lower Fork Legs and giving them their first coat of Yellow.

Bottom end on the YZ465 isn't catching any gears. I had this problem on my YZ490 had the cases split and put it back together and it worked and now it too isn't catching gears again.

Last time with the YZ490 I couldn't get the Cases apart myself and had to pay an arm and a leg to have someone split the cases for me (less then a case splitting tool though), and now I am going to have to split the cases on the YZ465 and the YZ490 again so I am going to have to purchase a Case Splitting tool.

Anyone know where to get the Correct Case Splitter for "CHEAP"?

Captmoto,

I just wanted to stop by my thread and say that I am honored that you stopped by my thread. Your YZ465 is awesome.

I can't wait to get home and break out the wire wheel. I have some nic nac parts that needs polishing. ;-)

Project is going slow, but hopefully that means it is going to be quality.

Found a Clarke Oversized Tank (Gosh those things are ugly) for a very low price and I bought it. Now I am like what was I thinking, this Tank has nothing to do with a Marty Moates Replica. I might do a Enduro Series or 2 on this bike so I guess I will use this Gas Tank for those Series Race. Gosh what was I thinking.

So upset. Was outbid at the last minute for a 1980 Yamaha YZ465 Exhaust Pipe and Silencer. My bid was $20 and the runner of the auction emailed me and said he was going to end the auction early for me, well he didn't and I was outbid by .50. So the person won the bid at $20.50

Scooter, where did you get your graphics? I like the clean look of the wing.

I did. I am just waiting to have the time to go a hardware store and get long enough bolts to make it from the tip of the shaft to the cases.

Sorry man. Not my bike. TerryK posted that for me. Apparently he felt bad about posting up Justin Bieber as an avatar. Apparently he also has a conscience. I think. Lol. I think that MIGHT be 315doggers bike, maybe. He posts on here occasionally. Over on bannedCR500riders.com too. He has some NICE looking bikes! Did a JMG 93 CR250 that just makes me stiff looking at it.

Did a lot of sanding on the paint job that I put on the lower fork legs (I don't have the money at the time for Anodizing). I didn't like the color yellow, so I sanded them down and am going to respray them tomorrow. I have like 100 Simons sticker on the way.

The Oversized Gas Tank looks horrible so that has to go as soon as I get some more money coming in.

79 YZ400 is a center port exhaust.

The 465's are side port exhaust.

Even it it fit the cases, you will need the 79 400 frame to stuff it into, or a good plumber for a pipe to it in the 465 frame.

I have been laid off from my job, so I now (well in between looking for new work) have time to put into this project. Got a few other projects that I am motivated to finish now because I need to sell them.
