For your bike compression is on top and rebound on bottom. You have a twin chamber fork. Older bikes have open cartridge forks with the rebound on top and the compression clicker is on bottom.

Start by getting the right springs for your weight and application. MX-Tech's or Race Tech's site will provide you with recommended rates. Also it does hurt to start with fresh suspension fluid and wear parts (if needed).

The plunger seal inside the master cylinder can wear and not adequately seal. Therefore when you press the pedal sufficient pressure doesn't build to engage thw piston/pads. Think of it as an engine piston with bad rings, you will have a lot of blow ... more »

Have you tried letting the bike cool down, adjusting the oil to the proper amount, and restarting it? (Assuming you didnt hear any malfunctioning noise) That is difficult to accurately diagnos without a tear down. Too much oil generates excess pressure ... more »

Like XNationalWrench said sounds like float level. But also check your reeds, they could be chipped/worn and not sealing 100%.

In regards to the KYB PSF fork for on the Honda CRF450 and Kawasaki KX450F.... -The entire fork is pressurized with air (the oil seal does hold this air in fork) -There is no bladder like the WP CC forks. -A leaking oil seal will still hold the air pressure. ... more »

Stock jetting is a good starting point to work from, espeically since you said the bike is stock. Also check the condition of the reeds.

Verify the cable is the correct one. Could be too long. I would pull your clutch back apart. Then print out the microfiche for the clutch assembly on your bike. That will show you the order the plates should be in. Or find a mechanic is that more experienced ... more »

Good find! Yes, definitely replace the gasket, along with the exhaust header gasket.

That style of a fork is pretty easy to service. The tools that will help the most is a real seal driver and oil height setting tool. Here is a video link of someone building forks very similar to yours. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJCwpCiCfpU
