I really had no intention of doing three in a row, tic-tac-toe. Muddy-Morris-Budds. Couple o' creeks and a minor mountain. Then I missed my ol' hometown race at Southwick, her last (boo-hoo) and I find myself strolling about the VIP tent like I'm a famous tent builder, at The RED BUD. Not a creek, not a mountain and not so red. Lots of green and lots of deep, sandy soil and many bare-chested men with beer breath screaming " Reeeeeddd  Buuuuu…" Often garbled, pickled, indecipherable, sometimes along with fluids, food niblets or facial hair, yet scream and chant the name of this holy spot they will. Incessantly. I generally attend a few of these brilliant Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Nationals per year, this year with four (4) now behind me, I'm qualified to rant about what's going on, as much as any other. Truthfully, I was dreading Red Buddery a pinch this season, because the last two have been so daggone stifling hot and miserable, that they were rather difficult to enjoy – this year was much different and, I planned accordingly. Last year, after bring stuffed alongside a shaded patch of fence near THE BIG AMERICAN FLAG (T.B.A.F), sweating like an oldie and generously giving up my last Coors Lite to a begging college girl in a peculiar, (yet striking) bikini-top and well-shredded shorts, I was determined to be prepared in the future. So, this year, with mild, balmy temps in the low 80's and a full gate of clouds in the race-sky, things were much more comfortable. Plus, I plunked down the $200 American buckeroonies for the full VIP Pass dealio. Lavish parking scenario, all day pit-pass – yes, you get to stay after they throw all the riff-raff and hooligans out at 1 and, a cozy VIP tent with free cold drinks (nope, no beers, grrrrr), a private air-conditioned bathroom, a splendid lunch with all the fixings, including a very confused taco-salad, a souvenir 40- Year anniversary RED Buuuuuuu T- shirt ( I got the small so I can sport the guns) and a complimentary race-program. Yes, $200 is a lot of coin in this wacky economy, yet this was the "Red Bull Red Bud National" and I wanted a little pampering, dammit. Worth mentioning, is that in the VIP tent there are other very cool people hobnobbing, schmoozing and mingling about, enjoying the sweet view of Mr. LaRocco's Leapage, the sand-whoops and, a TV with live-timing, etc. I realize there are those that will sneer and sniff when you mentioned you simply attended this epic Michigan motocross magnificence on a day-pass, and didn't camp out, as the wild hooligans insist you do. But I've done all that and now, in my late forties or early fifties, I demand that swanky hotel with the soft towels, the warm bed with the cold AC – and that refreshing shower with the confusing faucets. Oh, I'll be back to party with the scallywags and ruffians in LOT "B", but this weekend, I brought family and I behaved like I was somewhat human.

WHY we haven't yet held a MOTOCROSS DES NATIONS at Red Bud - defies explanation, it is, indeed, the bestest moto playground in the world, with the baddest of jumps ( I think that thing is getting shorter, "that's what she said") – the LEAP, I mean -and the biggest of tractors and water-towers. Yes, there are two-sides of the track you must truly see – and you must move about to properly view, but it is just a spectacular locale for motocross.

Next year, you should go. No, you really should.

*To the dude I threw Frisbee with for fifteen in the parking lot, as we tried to escape – good game, my man. Good game.[img]
