Coming into San Francisco, everyone was looking for a real mudder of a race. Sure, the track had been covered in plastic leading up to the event, but multiple days of rain had caused flooding around the Bay Area, and there was more rain in the forecast. Well, credit is definitely due to both Live Nation and the Dirt Wurx crews. They pumped water off the track around the clock leading to the event, and once unwrapped, the riders found it in surprisingly good shape. Yeah, it was soupy between jumps, but it was apparently easier to ride than the muddy track at Anaheim 1, which most guys described as a greasier surface.

While the track was good and raceable, everyone was casting a wary eye at the weather radar…there were still storms in the area. That concern wasn’t unfounded, as the skies opened up right before the two main events, which were shortened to 10 laps (for the Lites), and 15 laps (for the Supercross class).

In the Lites class, Jason Lawrence (Boost Mobile Yamaha of Troy) was probably as happy to see the rain coming down, as he has some considerable mud riding skills. He scored his first Lites win ahead of Tommy Hahn (Xtreme Pro Lites Kawaski) and Brett Metcalfe (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki).

The current Lites point leader, Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, rode conservatively to a seventh-place finish, and still has a 19-point advantage over the rest of the field.

The rain started falling even harder for the Supercross main event, and with the tough conditions it looked like it could be anyone’s race. Kevin Windham (Torco Racing Fuels Honda) controlled the early part of the main event, leading nearly a third of the laps. Davi Millsaps (Honda Red Bull Racing) then took over for two circuits, until he was displaced by Chad Reed (L&M Racing / San Manuel Band of Mission Indians / Yamaha) who had worked his way from fifth place at the start. Chad lead the remaining laps, and at the end cruised in for his third win of the season.
