I gave $150 for basically sight unseen just had this pic. was told that the bike was stuck in 3rd gear and that they thought the transmission was bad. But bike still ran if u push started it.

So I figured why not I like the white and red yamahas so got it home and was just checking it over externally and came to find that the shifter and shifter shaft were both stopped out.

I removed the shifter and since there were no spines left on the shaft I clamped on some vise grips and down shifted perfectly to neutral. no I'm stuck cuz I can find a shifter shaft even on eBay for a 89 yz250.

Part number 2VM-18101-01-00 looks like 88 n 89 n 90. But it's no longer available new the parts changed in 91 may have to consider going to the newer parts. Strange how the 87 showed a superseded part number that was available but it looks to be a different design too.

ya I found that 88-90 are same part. but nothing for all three years. did they change parts in 91 or just part numbers?

It looks like the whole shifting mechanism changed on the 91. Around that time Yamaha was getting a lot of hate then for notchy shifting so not surprised they changed it.

Ask your local dealer to do a parts search and they may be able to find a dealer with one still in stock
