2001 Honda CR 250r Frame Cracked,

Hey i just found out my downward spout on my frame is cracked! Ive callled many machine shops and they all say the job cant be tackled as the crack is in a bad place. So my option is to buy another frame and completly swap the bike over. Few questions.. wat years are the frames the same ? Ive been told 2000 -2001 have the same frame . Also im wondering how long has anyone done this and how long roughly do yiu think it will take? Im hoping to do it all myself n be back out before the seasons over! Job complex 1-10?

It took me a little over half a day to completely tear down an 89 cr250, putting it back together should take about the same time if you remember what goes where. Never owned a 2000's cr but the 2000-2001 should be identical, the 98 and 99 look the same as the 2000 but I would try getting the same year frame as your bike.

Take lots of pictures and notes so that you have a reference on how things go back. A full Saturday should get the job done. Having a buddy around to help with removing and installing the front end and swing arm is a good idea but not necessary. Difficulty Level - 5.

Most the times a cracked frame can be welded but this is in a bad spot..

00-01 are the exact same chassis. Buy a service manual. And read it.

Get the new frame. Remove one part on the old bike, inspect, clean, lube, and replace on the new frame. The bolt on stuff is pretty straight forward, take lots of pictures of the wiring harness and all of the electrical pieces.

Personally, I would take off the rear section of bike, then motor, and put those on the new frame first. Given you're working with a 17 year old bike you could get into some parts that don't want to move. This will add time and complexity to the job. Just be patient and use the right tools as to not cause other problems.

I know your in Canada, but thought it would be worth a try for you contact this person about their 2000 CR250r frame. I've seen it posted in my local CL for about a few months now so the seller might be motivated to ship it up North.
Owned an 01 CR2 & the 00-01 2nd gen AF chassis / frame are the same.

I saw a guy the other day at the track who had a 2002-2003 cr 250 and he said he had an 01 engine in it. Was best of both worlds he said, great year for engine and great year for chassis so that may be an option. You wouldn't be able to swap much chassis wise but this bike he had was sweet.

In stock form the 92-01 HPP engine feels like it has more power due to the hit it provides vs. the linear feel of the 02-07 case reed engine. Owned a 87,93,97 & 01 CR2 with all of them having engine modifications done. Also a friend owned a 96 model with mods that is considered by many engine gurus to be one of the best 250 2t engines.
That being said a current 03 CR2 with PC engine mods is noticeably faster with a very broad strong powerband in comparison to any 250 2t owned or ridden.
KTM did a better job than Honda with the factory tune from the showroom floor on the case reed engine design. That's why the KTM 250 2t pretty much won the engine shoot outs in the mx mags back then. If you go back to 2003 (I think ?) The KTM was putting out about 49 HP & the Honda was at about 47 HP on the mx mag dyno runs. I later saw a JD jetting dyno run posted on his website fine tuning the carb with his needles on an 04 CR2 making about 48-49 HP.
Through the yrs. due to the mx mags bagging on the engine in stock form & has now carried over through social media the Honda case reed engine has a misconception.
In my experience it truly is a diamond in the rough...

From experience building multiple cr's and owning them not just hearing it on the Internet. Yes they are the best. Built 00 engine is far superior in how easy it is to ride compared to the 02-07 engine. The 02-07 may be able to make more top but not much and defiantly no where near as good off the bottom. I've said it and I'll say it again. I think this is my favorite bike. Excellent handling and excellent engine. easy build.

Op this is a good option if you find a cheep complete 02-07 that isn't running. Just stuff that engine in the newer chassis. Not many mods needed. It would take the same amount of time to build this as it would to swap your frame out.

Ok so im thinking of getting a new frame to swapp over, does anyone know a good complete video of them tearing doen the bike and putting it back together as id like a video i can follow that any good? Also any special tools needed to pull of this job ?

The most important parts from the 2001 will fit on a 2002 and the frame is way better.
