Build thread for my recently purchased 02 RM125, I had one of these when I started MX at the age of 17, now 36 and had many bikes inbetween (Honda CRF450, Yahama 250f, KTM250sxf, Ktm450sxf) it was time to go back to where I stared and build a 125 for some fun!

I've just sold my KTM450 SXF as it was a bit savage for me as I don't get to ride much due to a young family

Bought from a FB group with lots of spares/receipts with a fresh crank/piston and gearbox rebuild

My old RM back when I was 17/18

Might try and find a set of these decals and do a sort of replica of it

Nice purchase! I'm a similar story to you, same age and we sold our 450s for 150 smokers a few years ago and have never looked back.

Looking forward to seeing what you have in mind for your RM, first thing I'd do is bolt on a case saver! Huh

That's a fantastic idea!! Bring your old bike back to life! Looks great, so clean.

Lol... was that an airbox or a tool box?Shocked

Yes a case saver is on the shopping list!!

So plans so far are to powder coat the frame black, new bearings throughout

Polish the swing arm and give it a general clean up and see what happens!

I'll be doing some research on upgrades during the build but understand the front brake is a good place to start

Any suggestions welcome!

That was an awesome looking RM! You should definitely do a throw back replica.
In terms of Graphics/Plastics, I would highly recommend giving Ryan Watson at Watson Decals a call. He did a full custom graphics kit, including plastics and fitting for my RMZ450 and did a fantastic job. If you sent him this pic and maybe a few more he would be able to replicate it.

Small update from the strip down, the frame and subframe are having some thread repairs completed and then they are off to the powder coaters!

Yuk! New bearings please!

Ready for powercoat, suspension will be going for a service/seals and new spring/powder coating

Awesome! I'm currently in the same boat. Started racing moto with a 99 YZ 125. Have a young family, sold the 450, and now I'm restoring a 2004 YZ125. Look forward to your build!

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys! I'll keep pushing on!

This will be a budget build so don't expect Ti hardware and A kit forks etc! but I'll try and make a tidy usable bike to the best of my ability

Looks fantastic. What technique(s) did you use?

Thanks!! I got a file to start with and take the cast line down to the same level as the clamp itself, then in the corners/tricky areas I used a dremel, then I used 120 grit sand paper, then 200, then wet/dry and finish with a scotchbrite pad and wd40 then a small bit of car polish
You could get it a bit better by using a polishing wheel for that mirror finish, I have one to hand at my other workshop so will give it a try and get them gleaming!

Thanks dirtdemon, if I had the budget I'm sure it would have more alloy goodness etc but due to funds I'm trying to clean re use what I can, with the bolts on the rear m/c below they are originals just put in a drill and cleaned up with a scotchbrite pad, it's amazing what you can do with hard work and elbow grease!!

Rear brake set up complete, new pads, polished the piston/pins and re assembled, cleaned up the rear brake pedal and got some nasty scrapes out of it as best I could
