Whats up Vital! Here is my current project.

I will give you a quick back story. I work at a motorcycle dealership. I was on vacation in Las Vegas last month and received a call from a friend at work and he said he came across something that I might be interested in. He said he had a 2000 KX 500 he had only seen one picture of and the seller said it was running. I simply told him I'd take it.

Here we are about a month later and I've done a couple small things and I will update this blog as I build the bike. I have a lot of projects at home so I wont be going crazy too quickly. My plan for this bike is to make it a runner. Not some fancy show bike to post pictures of for the social media nerds. Just a strong running, fun 500 that I can take to the track here and there and ride out in the desert as well.

Here is the original picture I saw before I saw her in person.

One of my good friends from work went to pick up my new baby and had himself a good ole American celebration on the way back to San Diego.

First little bit of parts came in. I went with the Renthal Carmichael High bend because I am 6ft 2

Took my lady to a movie this weekend and stopped by the little sticker shop in the mall. Had them make me some retro swing arm decals that came out pretty cool.

The carb was dirty on the outside but the inside was actually perfect and the previous owner even had it jetted correctly which is a good sign of things to come.

Brought her out to the local track for a shakedown. Overall the motor runs strong, jetting is perfect. I need to completely rebuild the suspension which doesn't surprise me. Brakes were great just need to make the bike more comfortable for my statute.

Here is a video of me riding it. Keep in mind this is my first time riding this bike, its 17 years old with stock suspension and tires. And I personally haven't ridden in about 6 months so go easy on me lol.

Good looking bike. Just watching the vid gave me arm pump, no shortage of horsepower from the ole KX500. You did great being that you've been off the track for awhile.

Thank you! I do have to get used to the vibrations I am coming off a 2015 RMZ450 so it is definitely a big change.

Awesome bike man, watching your video makes me miss mine a little bit. I should clarify that I miss the engine and that's about it haha. All in all though these really are great machines

Yeah I am going to re do everything on the bike to make it a little more ride able. Every time i start this thing it makes me feel like a kid again and I think that is why I like it. I have no reason to be riding a super fancy $11,000 bike just to ride the same speed I would on a $1000 bike.

I've been looking for a year now, either too late or I find mint 500s near 5k or roached out bikes people think they are worth way more than i'm willing to pay. Been really frustrating.

I want to do the same thing you are doing, make a solid bike ready to ride. My plan is KYB SSS (check), Brembo Brakes (check) and Compression release on the head. Other than those special items, just do the normal things freshening a bike up.

Yeah I got very lucky with this one, definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity. I couldn't be happier, my dad was a bigger guy and raced the 500 open pro when I was just a baby. Every time I fire it up its surreal.

Thanks man... I wanted a bike like you would have found a privateer on in 500GPs late 80s early 90s... I'm super happy with it, I just put a CR front brake hose on today to get away from the hose running down under the bottom of the forks for a better feel at the lever, it's way better now it's all bled... I hate bleeding brakes!!!

Vital needs a like button.... Because I like that!!!
I like the modern front end, I was a little bit tempted but stuck with the old (I got as far as buying a green cycra front number plate)

Thanks for the love on my scooter... I've not had chance to ride the old girl in a while, would like to get out once more this year before the weather closes in...

Keep those updates coming Smile

Only thing I've come across bad on this entire bike is this exhaust hanger has broken off the frame so I'm going to do a bit of fabricating to get it back to standard

Also a couple of my radiator fins are pushed in any tricks or tips to fix these?

The kx500 is definitely on the bike build bucket list. If it were up to me I would be trying to find a 1989 kx250 gas tank like the pros ran and would make it look like Emig's Kx 500 from the des nations.

That would be pretty badass, only reason I am keeping the desert tank is I ride a lot of desert. So its going to come in handy, not the prettiest but I'm not building this bike for show Im building it to beat on.

On the radiator, go to an auto parts store and get a fin comb. You just start carefully start to bend them back, then run the comb thru the fins and they look like new. You can get one for 10 bucks

Your bike looks exactly like one that was on Albuquerque's Craigslist market for like 4 months.
