This is not really a build compared to alot of people on here but I am excited about it so I figured I would share.
I have a 2008 yz450 which I got in 09 from a buddy when I was in high school. I also have and 03 rm250 that I got once I finished college and got a job.

The 450 is pretty simple it looked almost new when I got it. It was the limited edition white which I hate, but I got a good deal on it and I did not have the money to swap it over to blue. I put graphics on it and rode it for 9 years pretty much with no changes except basic maintenance.

Now the plastic and graphics are almost 10 years old and have holes rubbed through, and look pretty bad and I have always hated the white so I decided to go blue and do a big cleaning and greasing of everything now.

Here is a pic before any work was done

The 250 I bought as a budget bike for 1300 bucks it ran but was pretty rough. I rode it for a bit but the top end blew up on the 6-7 ride so I had to rebuild that.

Here is a pic when I bought it

Here is the piston it broke kind of weird the top came off.

Then I saw the Mcdade rm and decided I needed the retro 92 graphics so I bought those turning my budget bike into a not budget bike.

So the 450 is almost done I will post more pics later but the 250 just got started taking apart, I need new linkage bearings, new springs from race tech, new fork and shock oil, sent the head off to get the squish cut and my carb slide cut, new tires and new rear fender. Pretty excited to have both bikes in top shape.

Thanks, I figured I would post a few more pics of the 450 getting done. I replaced the linkage bearings, greased the swingarm, shock, headset and wheel bearings and cleaned everything up the best I could.

Here is a pic taking the bike apart

This is the day me and my dad adjusted the valves. The shock and linkage was not back together yet so I had to strap the swingarm to the frame so I could roll it around.

here is the bike going back together blue.

I just need to put the airbox decals and the fork tube decals on and it will be finished.

More pics of the 250 work to come.

Thanks I wish I could have taken the motor out and really cleaned everything but that would be a lot of work and I want to ride it. Most everything else was taken off to clean and then all new plastics.

I just bought new springs for my weight front and back for my 250. I was wondering for the rear shock what inside I would absolutely have to replace. The shock is not leaking currently, I noticed that pivot works does not make a kit for my bike like it does for some other bikes so If I replaced everything it would be quite expensive. Looks like I could get an all balls seal head for 35 bucks or a skf one for 65 I think. Looks like an oem bladder is 40 bucks. If its not leaking should I just change the fluid and spring, recharge it and run it?

Took apart the linkage and shock. 4 bearings are bad so I bought the pivot works kit. Going to clean the shock up and replace the spring and oil and maybe the head seal. Also got the brake off to clean up really nice.

So bad news today. First ride ran good for 5 laps. I am wondering if we did something wrong when adjusting the valves? Is there anything where the bike would run really good for 5 laps but not be right? Could we put the timing chain on the wrong tooth and not been timed right? We did everything by the book and quadruple checked everything we did. I thought we did it all right and it started good and rode fine.

So one intake valve head broke off and pin balled around the top end.

I am bummed but I am so thankful I was in a corner and not on the face of a triple. Just my bike broke and not my body.

Here are some pics

So I’m guessing the head and all the valves are shot. I did find a 08 head with valves used on eBay for like 450. Plus 200 something for the top end kit. Not sure if I could use the cylinder as is with that small Knick or not. But if not that’s like 200 to get re plated. I’m looking at like 1000 bucks into a 10 year old bike. I just don’t think it’s worth it. I think I may try to part out some parts and buy a new bike. I’m not in a rush because I have a second bike. What do you guys think.

Also any advice on parting out.

I’m assuming for all that damage to the head and cylinder and needing completely new bearings, suspension service, and whatever else it may need you’re looking at we’ll over $1000. Depends on if
You’ve got $2500 or more to do it right and you like the bike, or if that would be better off going to a newer bike.

Yeah if your talking going through the whole bike yeah way over 1000. It’s probably around 1000 with just parts for what broke. Bottom end seems good. Rod bearing seems good but it’s 10 years old. I mean I could maybe maybe sell the bike for 3k if it was all good and I just can’t justify putting over a grand into a bike that is only worth 3k.

Does anybody know if a 2008 yz450 rear rim will fit a 03 rm 250 hub? Found a couple small cracks in my Suzuki rim and maybe I could swap rims

Looks like they are both 36 spokes and 2.15 x19. Don’t see why they would not work. What about the spokes would they swap out?

I know for a while the excel's listed almost every new rm/rmz, kx/kxf, yz/yzf and even some ktm's. Only one that didnt work was the honda because they were 32 spokes. The rims should work just fine, but maybe check with a shop. Have them check the part numbers in their parts unlimited, wps or tucker rocky catalog

Thank you I actually cross referenced the part numbers and they are not the same. Then I measured my hubs on both bikes and the yz was like a half an inch wider where the spokes went in. So that means they are at different angles. I think the rims are not drilled the same.

But I did figure out my buddy has an extra stock 11 kx450 rim and I cross referenced them and it is the same. He is going to give it to me. Excel says with their rims you have to buy there spokes and can’t use oem. Wonder if that is just their new rims. My bike came with an excel rim. Would like to get some new spokes but the cheaper ones.

Kind of curious if you guys think this blew up because something I did or it just happened. I have pics of the cams when it quit. The dots line up and the piston was at tdc.

Got my wheel taken apart. Had to cut some spokes. Others came apart so I have extras if need be. Ordered up some excel spokes and got a new excel stock rim from a kx 450 to lace up.

Got the carb rejected and the cut slide in and athe head back on. Should be able to get it running soon after I take the radiators off and clean them.

Got my race tech springs and new oil in the mail so the forks and shocks are next. Waiting on my blind bearing puller to come in the mail because I broke the 22mm attachment that fits in my wheel bearings. I could not find the one attachement so I bought another Chinese kit.

Also got my case splitter to start the tear down of my 450 bottom end.

Did you take the valves out of the head? They could have been out of spec and stretched. Valves are a wear item and they probably should have been replaced depending on the hours on the bike.

No I have not. Not sure how to do that. They are all trashed I think. Bike had about 130 hrs on it I think so kinda a lot. I think it was due for some motor work. I adjusted the valves though and got them back into spec. 3 out of the 5 were out and none of them took more than 1 shim size to get them back into spec.

Thanks I hope it turns out nice.

Did some shock work today. Replaced the oil. Need to get the nitrogen refil done. Did not have time today.

Little update,

I got the front and rear suspension back together but not on the bike yet. Need to get some bearings greased before I do that.

My spokes came in so I need to lace up the rear wheel.

The 450 is down to a roller and I still need to split the cases and then start the cleaning process on some parts to get ready to sell.

Rm 250 POV

Figured I would add a POV vid from before the tear down.

The jumps at 20 sec and 1:35 are pretty big. Don’t mind when I stall it haha

I got the shock and linkage together and back on the bike. I got the front fork springs in and new oil and back on the bike. I greased the swingarm bearings and bolt. I cleaned up a lot of parts and now the bike is back together I can do a proper wash. I got the wheel built and kinda trued and a new tire one. I went with the irc ve33 tire. I ride mostly track but also mountain singletrack.

The wheel building was not too bad. Would have been easier with a stand I think. One major mistake I made was I forgot to put anit seize on the spokes. I notices when the wheel was built but all loose still. So I had to one by one take a nipple off and put it on the spoke threads. I got the wheel pretty true. The side to side was pretty good but I think I had a little up and down movement I could not get out.

I did get to ride for the weekend the 450 I’m going to buy to replace my 450. It is a 2014 and I think in every way it is a little better than mine was. Best part is the fuel injection. So no jetting issues. I’m pretty excited.

I have a float height question, when setting it do you make sure the needle is seated completely and the plunger out and then the tab rests on the plunger?

For me the hardest part is seeing into where the tab and plunger meet and on this 125 (mikuni tmx 38ss) It is extra hard. I kinda have to look from the back. My pwk on my 250 is way easier to see.

Nice pick up! I loved my 03 and still regret selling it. It was such a fun bike and I rebuilt it for $1500 including new pipe, silencer, cylinder and clutch. Should have spent some time jetting it and it would have been perfect. But instead, I sold it like an idiot. Enjoy that 125 and don't sell it!

Thanks it seems to be in good condition until I broke the float. Had a new float and neadle and seat set over nighted and it cost me 90 bucks ouch. But I wanna ride it so bad. Still a little confused on this float height thing. It’s easy in pictures but hard to figure out on your own carb

Bike ran really well this weekend super stoked with it. Power was awesome. Until the fuel air screw fell out. Was going to adjust it and noticed it was not there anymore. Ordered a new one.

AWESOME thread!

Let a brother know when you're coming to a National or a Supercross. We need to have a beer & talk about crazy projects.

I go to many of the pro races and it's always great to catch up with people that build great projects. Thunder is on the "maybe" list due to a Canadian Natuonal the same weekend. Maybe I'll see ya there!
