This is not really a build compared to alot of people on here but I am excited about it so I figured I would share.
I have a 2008 yz450 which I got in 09 from a buddy when I was in high school. I also have and 03 rm250 that I got once I finished college and got a job.
The 450 is pretty simple it looked almost new when I got it. It was the limited edition white which I hate, but I got a good deal on it and I did not have the money to swap it over to blue. I put graphics on it and rode it for 9 years pretty much with no changes except basic maintenance.
Now the plastic and graphics are almost 10 years old and have holes rubbed through, and look pretty bad and I have always hated the white so I decided to go blue and do a big cleaning and greasing of everything now.

The 250 I bought as a budget bike for 1300 bucks it ran but was pretty rough. I rode it for a bit but the top end blew up on the 6-7 ride so I had to rebuild that.

Here is the piston it broke kind of weird the top came off.
Then I saw the Mcdade rm and decided I needed the retro 92 graphics so I bought those turning my budget bike into a not budget bike.
So the 450 is almost done I will post more pics later but the 250 just got started taking apart, I need new linkage bearings, new springs from race tech, new fork and shock oil, sent the head off to get the squish cut and my carb slide cut, new tires and new rear fender. Pretty excited to have both bikes in top shape.

This is the day me and my dad adjusted the valves. The shock and linkage was not back together yet so I had to strap the swingarm to the frame so I could roll it around.

I just need to put the airbox decals and the fork tube decals on and it will be finished.
More pics of the 250 work to come.
The Shop
Took apart the linkage and shock. 4 bearings are bad so I bought the pivot works kit. Going to clean the shock up and replace the spring and oil and maybe the head seal. Also got the brake off to clean up really nice.
So one intake valve head broke off and pin balled around the top end.
I am bummed but I am so thankful I was in a corner and not on the face of a triple. Just my bike broke and not my body.

So I’m guessing the head and all the valves are shot. I did find a 08 head with valves used on eBay for like 450. Plus 200 something for the top end kit. Not sure if I could use the cylinder as is with that small Knick or not. But if not that’s like 200 to get re plated. I’m looking at like 1000 bucks into a 10 year old bike. I just don’t think it’s worth it. I think I may try to part out some parts and buy a new bike. I’m not in a rush because I have a second bike. What do you guys think.
Also any advice on parting out.
You’ve got $2500 or more to do it right and you like the bike, or if that would be better off going to a newer bike.
Looks like they are both 36 spokes and 2.15 x19. Don’t see why they would not work. What about the spokes would they swap out?
But I did figure out my buddy has an extra stock 11 kx450 rim and I cross referenced them and it is the same. He is going to give it to me. Excel says with their rims you have to buy there spokes and can’t use oem. Wonder if that is just their new rims. My bike came with an excel rim. Would like to get some new spokes but the cheaper ones.
Got my wheel taken apart. Had to cut some spokes. Others came apart so I have extras if need be. Ordered up some excel spokes and got a new excel stock rim from a kx 450 to lace up.
Got the carb rejected and the cut slide in and athe head back on. Should be able to get it running soon after I take the radiators off and clean them.
Got my race tech springs and new oil in the mail so the forks and shocks are next. Waiting on my blind bearing puller to come in the mail because I broke the 22mm attachment that fits in my wheel bearings. I could not find the one attachement so I bought another Chinese kit.
Also got my case splitter to start the tear down of my 450 bottom end.

Did some shock work today. Replaced the oil. Need to get the nitrogen refil done. Did not have time today.
I got the front and rear suspension back together but not on the bike yet. Need to get some bearings greased before I do that.
My spokes came in so I need to lace up the rear wheel.
The 450 is down to a roller and I still need to split the cases and then start the cleaning process on some parts to get ready to sell.
Figured I would add a POV vid from before the tear down.
The jumps at 20 sec and 1:35 are pretty big. Don’t mind when I stall it haha
The wheel building was not too bad. Would have been easier with a stand I think. One major mistake I made was I forgot to put anit seize on the spokes. I notices when the wheel was built but all loose still. So I had to one by one take a nipple off and put it on the spoke threads. I got the wheel pretty true. The side to side was pretty good but I think I had a little up and down movement I could not get out.
I did get to ride for the weekend the 450 I’m going to buy to replace my 450. It is a 2014 and I think in every way it is a little better than mine was. Best part is the fuel injection. So no jetting issues. I’m pretty excited.
For me the hardest part is seeing into where the tab and plunger meet and on this 125 (mikuni tmx 38ss) It is extra hard. I kinda have to look from the back. My pwk on my 250 is way easier to see.
Let a brother know when you're coming to a National or a Supercross. We need to have a beer & talk about crazy projects.
