Yesterday I picked up a 2016 KTM 50mini. It will be for my sons Christmas this year. His first bike started off as an Oset 12.5 which is about the smallest bike available, it is a trials design though so we had to do some work to set it up for MX.

The KTM will be a little more challenging as the weight of bike and rider increase and because this is an actual gas to electric conversion vs just modding the old Oset.

Here is a stock Oset 12.5 and ours after we finished it.

I probably wont sell it until I have the new bike finished. Hopefully (fingers crossed) by Christmas. If you need something before then I can walk you through the build. Nothing too difficult and I have a spare aluminum manitou fork you can use.

Modding the fork isn't too bad and is easy if you can access a lathe.

I actually learned about the frame mods from a guy down in La. He may be close to you.

The electronics are easy to get.

Probably the hardest part will be splitting up a 12.5 and a 16 Oset to get the swingarm and brakes. and bars etc.

Wow. Cool project.

I can't help but think, "and so it begins". Meaning, we may have a generation now, that starts and rides electric all the way up. It certainly takes a lot of entry barriers away like ICE mechanicals and their repair, etc. I mean, single mom's could do it and not be so overwhelmed.

Oset seems to be the perfect starter for a 2 or 3 year old. They are just up there in price. I was thinking of doing a strider conversion with a 150w motor. They have a company called stacyc that are doing the an electric strider which looks pretty sweet for about $600 but i think i could do the same for less. Keep us posted on the ktm project.

Dude, the strider idea sounds awesome. Wish I had thought of that!

I think im going to bite the bullet and go oset. Seems to be the only electric bike out there that i would have full control over as far as speed. I looked into moding a razor mx350 but seems like it would be a crap load of work. I spoke with the guy you mentioned, travis, who did a white frame 12.5 one with the same mods as yours. also has an awesome write up on it. Super nice guy. What type of batteries did you replace the stock ones with?

We have used a few different packs the last couple years. Started with 2 three cell packs, then two fives wired for current and last two fives wired for voltage. Each cell has a max voltage of 4.2 low of 3.7.

Hobby king.com is probably the place to go for batteries. But if you buy from them, do it now. Some of their stuff ships from China and will not make it before Christmas if you wait too long.

Finally pulled the trigger and got the oset. It is heavier than i expected. I want to swap to lipo batteries to shave weight. Ill do the frame mod at a later time. So can i just go to my local hobby shop and get a 24v lipo and charger? Or is it more complicated than that?

Nice!

At the very least you will need to solder new battery connectors. But, other than that you should be able to plug and play. Lipos are 4.2 volts per cell (fully charged), so you can get one 6 cell or two three cell packs The capacity is rated in amp hours or MAH. More capacity and the battery will last longer, but also be larger and heavier.

Lipos require a certain type of charger and care too. Just read up on them and you'll be good.

Thanks for the help. Noticed the grips were on it were pretty large for a childs hand. Went and bought some regular mx grips. Come to find out the throttle tube it self is larger too. So changing the grip on the trottle side didnt really help with the diameter

It is going pretty smoothly. The motor and all was easy enough. Most difficult part was finding a drive sprocket the correct pitch with a bore that would work. I got lucky and #41 sprockets work with the 415 chain.

The suspension has been a little more difficult, but it will get there. Maybe not in time for Christmas. I may leave the stock suspension on it for Christmas morning then finish the bike after.

Lets see some pics. By the way can you tell me what you used for the wheels on your oset? Im going for that mx look too. I started by fabbing and mounting some crf50 plastics.

I used the stock front hub from the oset 12.5 and stock rear hub from a oset 16. Laced up standard mx spokes to pro wheels 10 inch wheels.

I will post some pics as soon as the little ktm is finished.

Actually after loo k ing at your photo, my front hub may not be from a 12.5. It looks to have a larger diameter center.

I had a chance to take some pictures today while everything was mocked up. Still have some adjusting to do on the motor mount, need to machine or adapt a front axle, fab up a bracket for the rear shock, and the brakes won't be here until tomorrow. All said it is coming along pretty well.

Holy crap! That is awesome. What are you going to do with the radiators? Leave them or mock something up? Just curious.

Hey, Sorry no updates lately. I've got the brakes mostly ready but need a new rear bracket. Working on the upper shock mount now. Been busy with work and the weather has been terrible...

Hi, thanks!

I'm going to leave the radiators for now. If this motor doesn't handle the juice the next option is a water cooled brushless motor, for that I'll use the radiators with an inline pump.

If this motor holds up, I can pull the radiators off later. And everything else can stay in place (batteries etc).

Is it a 3/4" throttle tube?

MR50's came with 3/4" bars and a dinky throttle.

Hi guys, sorry nothing new yet. I have all the parts except some that we are custom machining. (clamps, front wheel spacers, and a shock mount)

Hope to get back in the machine shop this week. Bought some land to build a track and some trails on and have spent most of my time out there.

I am finally getting a little work done on the 50. Here are a few pictures of the brakes and forks and shock. And the images of the clamps needed for the new forks. Motor mount/battery tray will be next.

That's awesome! Terrific build!

What program do you use for CAD?
The CAD drawings were done by the shop that is finishing up this project for me. I do not know what they use, but I will ask.
