So I’ve been on the hunt for an 04 KX125 for a while now, found one, and upon inspection it’s a 2003 model. I know the linkage is different and brake line routing is as well, but didn’t know if there were more drastic differences than that.

I’ve previously owned a stock 04 that was awesome, and later picked up an 03 with an Athena cylinder, and literally every cheapest replacement part, and that was a total turd. I didn’t know if my bad impression of the 03 was due to the model itself, or poor choice of parts from the previous owner.

I know my opinion might not be worth a damn, but I had an 02 kx125, and man was that a complete hunk of dog sh*t. Not only was it in bad condition, but just a bad overall bike.. Completely rebuilt the motor and put a brand new cylinder on it and the motor was still weak, suspension was no good, and just didn't do what I wanted it to do. It left a bad taste in my mouth and has made me never want another kawasaki two stroke. I'm on a yz125 and it is way better. I'm sure the kx got a little better after 02 though.

If you sleeve the motor instead of a new cylinder it will be a pig!

So here's my experience been on kawasaki's my whole life. My dad has an 02 that when he got it was a dog but we put a slot in the transfer port in the back and wow what a difference and that came from team green to wake the motor up. Now me and my brother have 2003's and the only thing to get that woke up was an overbore. In stock form the 03 is anemic and lacks any sort of bottom end and had a ridiculous mid range hit.

03 is hard to find odd ball parts bike, would go with 04+ if you can, the pipe in works form is an example of one hard to find item.

I have an 04 with the Athena kit on it and it rips. Definitely better than the 03. Mine isn't quite as fast as my buddy's ported YZ but it close.
