Having never ridden a 150SX I have been very curious how well they would stack up against an older 250 2 Stroke. Lets say late 90's bikes? Has technology advanced enough to make up for the 100cc difference?

Own a 19 150SX coming off a YZ 250 and love it. Plenty of power down low and afterburners mid. Signs off quick but thats the fun of it.

That's the biggest difference I say about my 150 vs my 125. Had PC do some work to the 150 cylinder and the 125 still pulls much better up top.

Litpro data back to back same day same track I was 1.3 seconds slower on the 150 than my 250. Top speed was less than 3 mph different and average speed was also a little lower. Both bikes were 2018's.

Now if you was to put it up against say a early 2000's RM 250 you're still going to be down on power, but I think the chassis and suspension will help you keep up a better average speed which is whats more important. The 250 may pull 58mph down one section and the 150 52, but if your average on the 250 is 32.5mph and on he 150 is 34.8 you'll have lower lap times.

Granted your riding ability also has a factor, if you're slow and can't take advantage of any of what either bike can actually do then its a moot point and just ride whats the most fun for you.

Running a pwk carb with stic insert on my 2018 150sx and the bike absolutely rips fromntop to bottom. I weight 250lbs and it will pull me in 3rd most corners.

If you go to harris performance website, you'll see 150sx peak with stic HP not far off a yz250. Obviously it makes that with rpm and not torque but dang, these bikes are fun

I run a Lectron HV carb and bike rips as well. But going to double down on what you said about the 150sx...the bike is an absolute BLAST. As light as a 125 but enough power to get you over any jump or any corner.

I have both a 2017 150sx with a lectron and pro circuit pipe, and a 2019 250sx with a well-jetted mikuni. The 150 absolutely rips and is a ton of fun but make no mistake it still has characteristics of a small bore 2 stroke. The 250sx can be lugged a bit and still roll into power really well. The 150 has to be ridden from middle rpm and up, which you'd probably expect. As long as you are comfortable keeping the 150 in the middle to upper rpm range, it's a rocket. The bike is super nimble and corners insanely well but requires that you pay more attention to shifting and clutch use. I'd love to try a pwk with stic on the bike eventually. If you want a bike that you can be a bit lazy on, then you might want to consider the 250. I personally love having both the 150 and 250.

Since your original question compares it to an older 2 stroke, in my opinion, the 150 is a much more fun option over the older japanese bikes. The modern chassis and even box stock suspension on the 150 is really good. Now throw a new 250sx in the mix against older japanese 2 strokes and there is absolutely no questions the KTM wins hands down. For a 250 it's a super easy bike to ride with very linear power and almost no vibration. You can't go wrong with the new KTM smokers regardless what size you choose.

Love my 19 150sx. FMF Fatty/Shorty combo, milled head, some port work, well jetted Mikuni. It's a blast to ride. I got it the end of November. I've ridden a 250sx and own a 350sxf as well. I don't think its up there with a 250 two stroke. Like stated above, it does have the small bore characteristics, but that's what I wanted. Feels better than any other 144's I've owned or ridden. I feel like the 150 makes you push and focus on technique, which is what I wanted.

The 150sx is a weapon in the right hands but it doesn't have the torque of a 250sx or YZ250.

It's an extremely fun bike to ride tho
