I was gonna say get a 350 until i saw the budget. It’s the perfect vet bike

Later model yz250 at least 03 plus i believe the same applies for the ktm 250/300. Some engine changes that make getting parts easier nowadays like cranks n such.

I know for certain that the yz250 is pretty much the same thing 03 through 2020 engine wise.

Gonna throw in my vote for an early 2000's KTM 300. Very tractable power, doesn't hit like a 250, but plenty of sing. Adding a flywheel weight not needed. Most used ones are going to be ex-vet bikes, so they may not be as thrashed as a 250 mxer.

Won't be as sharp of a carver as a YZ or RM, but coming off that ATK you'll think it's a surgical scalpel.

I've seen a few of these around my parts! How are they maintenance wise? Same as most other 2 strokes?
They don't get wrung out as hard, typically don't need as high of a rebuild frequency. I had one that was vet mx'd, cross-country raced and trail ridden for 10 years on one top end. Seriously. Still was tight and had great compression. Outside of crash damage freakin' thing was absolutely bullet proof.

Fact that you have a low budget plan on having to spend another 3 to 5 hundred, chain, tires, bearings etc. Also any other worn parts, so i would say yz250 all day, pretty sure no other bike has part availability luke the yz, search ebay and you will see.

2 stroke 250 or 125. Much cheaper to run, easier to fix.

I'd stay away from older 4 strokes for that budget.

I've been seeing a bunch of 125s. I think for my MX skill level and what I want to do it would be fun..🤔

100%

I had a new kxf250, used my brothers 10 year old cr125 and loved it so much I sold the kxf and bought myself a 125.

so much fun, I don't think I'd ever get another 4stroke again. I'm a intermediate rider and for my speed etc... I'm more than happy on a 125

Tough to find for 2k but agree, yz 250 all day
Not in Southern California in the area he’s in. There’s tons of yz250’s out here for that price

You sound like a weekend hack rider ( like most of us ) just look for the freshest 450 you can afford.

The lack of torque on any bike you can buy will kill you, especially a two stroke, you will be miserable.

I have been there done that.

With your budget I would stay away from any 4 stroke. My best advice would be to save up a bit more to buy a decent maintained KTM / Husky 350 4 stroke. The bike you are coming from being a 4 stroke the 350 is going to give you more confidence then any 2 stroke. It is easy to ride and is amazing fun. You are a big guy is assume so I would make sure the bike you will get has the proper springs in it for your weight. If you still want to go for the 2 stroke route I would reccomend going for a bike that suits the type of track you are going to ride the most. Hard pack you could have a lot of fun on a 150. Deep sand 2 stroke riding is very demanding and very hard work. I rode motocross my whole life but even I had troubles riding a 250 2 stroke in deep sand tracks because you have to work really hard (I'm 30 yo a well) If the YZ 250 is out of your budget I would consider the RM 250 if parts are not an issue in your area. I had a terrible time to get OEM parts so I kicked it out of my garage. Good luck and let us know what you ended up with!

I don't get the comments about being miserable on a stroke ^

Yes, they are harder to ride with more shifting, less torque etc... but they can be more fun.

Like @2F4A said maybe a 150/ 144 just gives you that little more power and more forgiving if you're in the wrong gear

Update: I e nded up getting a 2006 RMZ250 for FREE..! I got it running pretty damn good with a carb rebuild and fresh liquids. I figure, even if it isnt exactly what I was looking for, I cant go wrong with a FREE platform to start with.

It's was passed to me by a buddy getting out of the Marine Corps who had no space or way to get it home. It was a last minute thing and he had to get rid of it! I filled up his gas tank in his truck so I guess it cost me $48.
