2009 KTM150SX advice?

Hey guys, Ive been out of the riding scene for about 11 years when I was on a KX80, Ive been looking to get back into it and Ive chosen the KTM150sx.

Theres a nice 2009 KTM150 in my area I'd like to check out but my question is are the newer KTM150 models such as 2011-14 much more advanced than the 09? is it worth going for the newer bike or will the 2009 model be ok?

if its a good price go for it, otherwise you can get a yz125 dirt cheap and do a bigbore motor build on the cheap too

I was never a fan of the PDS shock, but it wasn't bad. I'm not super fast, but the PDS bike would wear me out quicker.

I loved the motor on my 144sx, when it wasn't blowing up and being replaced by KTM for free every 6 hours.

If you want the linkage you need atleast a 2012. But IMO the PDS is not bad at all, atleast not for me. The 150's are the updated 144's. You simply can't go wrong the 150sx. Just jet it properly and have fun!

PDS is the rear shock without linkage. Works great for everyone except the internet fast guys. We have a 2008 144 that has been a great bike. I picked up a 2013 model 150 and hardly have any ride time on it. Was a blast the little bit of time I've got to ride it though. They've gotten a bit more power out of it over the years. The build quality is great, excellent fit and finish with good quality components. Be careful when installing the air filter! it only goes in one way and easy to not get the lower rear corner seated in properly. Don't want to suck dirt....

Make no mistake, I am NOT an internet fast guy. I am, without a shadow of a doubt, an internet slow guy.

I loved the fit and finish on my '07 144sx, because of it, I will ALWAYS be a fan of KTM.

Because of it, I'll NEVER own a "first year" model, ever again.

I don't know what bikes sell for in Aussie land, so please don't take my advice.

That said, that bike is over priced. Here in the states, it's not worth a lick over $2500.

I hated the shrouds, my knee braces tore the black up badly, and it looked horrible within 10 hours. (That's two top ends, and 1 bottom end, in that time frame, also)

The price is pretty normal for Australia the 2012 models are going for 6k+ I think it's because it's a ktm150 and there's no other bike like it..

Check out Husqvarna. They are giving away 125's with the big bore kit for like 3500 for a 2012-13 right now in the US.

I did the 4mm over (144cc) piston on my 05 125sx. Currently have a 2010 150xc. The current KTM150's which is really a 144 is a bored and stroked motor that has a lot more mid and low end than what my 05 125 with a 4mm oversize piston had. If you buy
a bit of a worn out 150, you can have Eric Gore bore it out and replate it using the 2mm over giving you a 153CC engine that really rips.

The PDS worked alright on the new frame ('11 model) but I never heard anyone say they got it working better than 'ok' on the older models. I had a 08 SX 144, then an '11 150 and now a '13 250 btw.

In my opinion, yes, the newer models are way better and I would look at at least an '11 model or look at a yamaha 125 if you can't find a good deal.

I'm not sure about your speed on a track (or whatever type of riding you plan on doing), but as this is your first bike in 11 years, I'll assume you aren't any faster than me. I have an 09' KTM 150 and I love it. I race mostly just for fun (top 5 c class), and haven't felt that the lack of linkage is any worse than any Japanese bikes I've ever ridden. Unless my assumption is wrong and you are going to be racing A class, I wouldn't even worry about the bike not having a linkage. If having a 5 year old bike doesn't bother you, then go for it! It's a great bike.
