Well,.. told myself this wouldn’t happen but it did. Just got a call from the lady that she signed the papers for a new bike.

I’d really like some feedback from anyone who has had a TC50. I’d like to know what will wear out, service increments, what to keep an eye on, and what to expect.

Thanks in advance!

No photos yet, but I’ll get some up.. might not be till Christmas morning though.

If your kid is learning adjust the clutch so that it doesn't slip much before engaging. I see kids all the time revving the crap out of them going no where cos they can't keep enough speed up so that the clutch doesn't slip. Makes it easier on the child and the bike.
My daughter has 30 hours on hers and other than regular oil changes i haven't touched it. Will be doing a top end soon though

I have a fast 6yo on one and we chew through parts like its nothing 15hrs on a clutch and kickstart spring, 20hrs and the piston and ring is cactus, keep a spare stator, the ratchet gear and main drive gear is good for about 30-40hrs keep a kickstart seal and front sprocket seal and bush on hand, rotate the clutch pins every 30hrs so every second clutch maybe, the spark plug caps tend to snap off internally that can give you problems, jetting is way off I wont even get into it right now hahaha hmmmm what else....

Change the oil every ride with a good semi synthetic ATF oil.

So to all you experts, what’s the best clutch setting for a fast kid coming off a pw? (For maximum life) Also, I’ve been riding my whole life.. working on a bike is nothing new to me. Thanks for all the horror stories. I really hope my piston doesn’t turn into a cactus.

This bike is serving as a quick stepping stone towards our fun 90’s project KX60. We aren’t a crazy mini family (:

How many CCs of ATF are commonly recommended? Same, or more than the manual suggests?

I honestly think stock will be fine to start out with. Kids adapt to the hit quickly.

I ran my daughters clutch as low as 4 clicks in from all the way out, she's little and weighs nothing though. My son started at around 7 clicks in. On faster, drier tracks it isn't a big deal but if it's muddy with deep ruts and the kid is just crawling along it will help avoid over heating. I run 200ml of oil in both mine, i believe the new ones, 2017 onwards call for that. Our 14 model listed 150ml but i always ran 200ml

I've heard keeping the pressure cleaner away from the ignition cover helps with the stator problem. Agree on the front sprocket seal and bush, they go pretty quickly.
I won't let my kids kick start their bikes. You watch kids kick start their bikes and a lot of times they have their foot above the kick starter and then kick down on it rather than having pressure on it and pushing through it. I believe this causes the kick starter issues as my son did that to his

I have 2. Our practice bike has 100 hours on it. The only thing we've done to it was a clutch and 1 top end. It's getting a complete rebuild to prep for next year. Our race bike has 40 hours on it. The only thing so far was a top end I did at 35 hours. Get the jetting right and change the ATF after every practice/race day.

We have the 17' KTM 50. 105 hrs on bike. Watch the radiators. My son split 3. All 3 in rutted corners from tip overs carrying decent speed. Water pump impeller is plastic and prone to failure. Nihilo makes a good replacement. Never had any kind of stator problems although we hear this issue a lot. Other than that its been a solid bike. I do the pistons about every 20 hrs. Had to replace one clutch pack. Once you figure out jetting the bike is on point. Follow KTM ration to the tee (60:1). If not it will run like a turd. We mix VP 110 with pump 93 50/50. Change ATF after every ride. Cheap insurance.

Merry Christmas to your kid. Awesome memories ahead for your family.

Another thing is stay on top of the exhaust packing also. Radiators are a issue and if he is jumping that bike you will without question need them replaced sooner or later. Go aftermarket and don't look back. When you eventually do a clutch replace the basket, pins, ball cage, friction disks, and top pressure plate. I would Drain the coolant and user engine ice also. I'm not sure if it helps with heat but it's worth it's cheap insurance.

For a new rider I would either change the gearing or set the clutch down to like 4 clicks and make it more aggressive as he gets used to the feel. We run 12/38 gearing and have our clutch set at 12.

In my opinion if you keep up with maintenance these little bikes are amazing.

Most people get 20-40 hrs on a top end on 50's. 200 with out loss seems crazy.

I'm running about 240ml/cc of FUCHS semi synthetic, mineral is to harsh on the clutch and synthetic is to slippery to get a good clean engagement, in my experience

Sealing the ignition cover good helps, there is a little hole in the bottom of the case I seal that, sometimes they will be riding on a wet track and water will get in and the bike will just stop.

The absolute best thing you can do to that 50 is remove the POS flow control valve for a race tech gold valve kit in the forks, and the shock rebound is too fast, gold valve that thing also. Or get NOST to do all the work and he’ll get the fork away from that POS air fork design, the 65 bikes hosts the same crappy suspension, while the 85 is pretty dang good stock, it’s basucslly a smaller explorer fork. Aside from that, change the piston every 20hrs, or depending on how it’s ridden, the 65 is much better but the 85 is soooo much better. Above all that, spend time teaching fundamentals, winning on a 50/65/85 means nothing, no one cares, have fun!!

Buddy of mine went through a ton of radiators last season as well as some mount for the over flow bottle I think as well as cracked exhaust multiple times, few top ends even one took a shit at LL last year. Decent bike but if your kids fast be prepared to spend some cha Ching on parts/repairs.

New question.. when the bike is on the stand, how much resistance is the rear wheel supposed to have? Bike hasn’t been started yet, but when I pushed it into the house, it didn’t roll as easy as any other bike I’ve owned. Thanks for the input.

(Ps. Read the manual and did some google searching. Found nothing pertaining to this)
