2020 yz450f problems

Just a feeler if anyone had any problems with their 2020 yz450f. I race pro motocross and have just been doing a bunch of local racing here in NY/NJ/PA and the bike blew up with 31.2 hours. Oil is changed every other ride and filter every other oil change. Race days I change the filter after 1st motos. Bike gets regular professional level maintenance obviously. I’m pulling the motor apart now and will update when I find out what went wrong.

I haven't heard of anything like this. I have around 30 hours with no problems.

A friend of mine blew his motor on the 20 at 6 hrs I think he said...Yamaha covered it...motor was totalled.
I only have 1.3 hrs on mine, hoping everything goes ok

Following this topic as I just picked one up and have about 2 hours on it. What happened that you're pulling the motor apart?

Sorry I couldn't resist, everyone who blows up a low hour engine starts out with I change the oil every ____ hours. Probably a freak part failure, valve or rod related.

The stock filter setup on these bikes are notorious for allowing dirt to get in the intake, someone who would know says this is the sole reason of of yzf’s blowing up early

I just bought one Saturday. I've not seen anything local happen to any of them other than a rock got the case on one and drained the oil without them knowing.

I watched a guy remove his dirty air filter from his yz450 and saw dirt fall down into the intake. Talked to my mechanic about this and he said that the design is good for business.

It’s easy to guarantee no dirt gets in. Take a small handheld vacuum and when you change the filter just vacuum out the intake. Takes 3 seconds

No it's not, but you all now know the issues, so a small vacuum is a great idea, cheap insurance I would say.

last week one of our local pro riders 2020 blew up at 25 hours. looks like the rod broke and put a big old hole in the cases.

That's like 250 hours by your standard vet rider

How is this not easy? You walk over to the bike with it, undo the same bolt, pull out the filter and cage you were going to anyway, then vacuum it. Replace said filter and cage and done. It truly doesn’t take long

How is this not easy? You walk over to the bike with it, undo the same bolt, pull out the filter and cage you were going to anyway, then vacuum it. Replace said filter and cage and done. It truly doesn’t take long
Because you don't need to do any of that at all with any other air filter in history, which is why I said not comparatively easy.

My new design of toilet paper only takes one extra tool and just another half minute to get off the roll: easy!

I’d rather deal with the air box/intake then air forks any day. That engine is amazing and it’s really not a large deal to take one extra step.

I would think they could have spring forks, a good engine, and an air filter design that isn't potentially fatally flawed

Interesting, obviously was oil, but the bearings look oil starved.
Couple of questions:
When you change your oil, how much do you put back in?
Do you ride wheelies for extended lengths?

40 hrs on mine, no problems (vet A Class)

60 hrs on my sons 2019 YZ450. (local A class) No problems and piston looks almost brand new, (doing a tope end as we speak)

Not trying to say anything negative, but you are replacing timing chains and tensioners at EVERY top end correct?

At the A Class/Pro level, the chain and tensioner is more important to change then the piston.

Again, not trying to insult your mechanic ability, just making sure that, at the Pro level, you can burn through a cam chain in under 20 hours, right?

The 18 and 19 had transmission issues. I've seen multiple of failures the last couple of years.

I had about 50 hours on my 18 and 19 and never had issues, but i know there has been people with failing transmissions. I don't know if that is the case with the updated 20 and 21 bikes.
