Is my new 17 KTM 250 SX-F going to explode if I dare to use an off the shelf full synth 10w50 4t oil for $6 a quart vs the motorex $20 a quart? Who dares to temp the gods? Is this stuff just snake oil, or are we taking magic?? What say the glorious KTM master race??

Motorex is probably paying for the publicity KTM makes. I don't believe the bike will recognize it's not lubricated by Motorex oil, nor will another brand of oil sneak out of the bike thinking it doesn't belong in there.

At the end of the day, oil is oil. There are different specs and qualities, but as long as you put some good stuff in there and change it often, your bike won't see the difference.

Yeah the 4L jug of the KTM branded Motorex is $70 fucking dollars. That’s like 3 oil changes give or take. I’m thinking rotella or amsoil. We have an amsoil dealer local.

In my 15 YZ250f I was running the castrol 10w40 4t oil. That seemed fine and it was $5 a quart.

It's not snake oil, but you can buy just as good or better oil for less $$.
your bike can't recognise the brand of oil.
Rotella is popular for a reason..

Lol you got me there. I guess me and probably everyone else probably didn't understand then. I thought this was about whether or not to use off the shelf oil vs recommended motorex in a KTM. I don't think anyone disputes you can use amsoil or any other decent oil in a Yamaha.

Every 3 hours? Damn.

I use amsoil in my KTM 300. No issues.

I've heard rotella and the rekluse is a great match. Do you know why that is? I have a rekluse and am wondering if I should go that route.

I know Rekluse used to recommend Rotella with their clutches.

Rotella T6 5-40W (the "blue" container). High-grade oil and cost-effective. Change oil on my 350 EXC w/Rekluse every 5 hours, oil & filter every 10 hours. At $22/gallon you're not cringing every time you crack open the drain plug.

Even the standard $12-13 stuff works just fine (white jug).

Hes not cringing at $22. Its the Motorex 4L jug for $70 that I cringe at. Thats ridiculous. And as I said in the OP, do we need this magic sauce at that price, or will some other name brand work?? There are several other brands of oil that hold the same standards for a fraction of the price.

Seems to me that years ago the KTM owners manual actually called for Shell motor oil...?

So for instance this is $9 a quart at Walmart. Would this be acceptable to run in the KTM??

All the necessary ratings that your oil needs to have should be in your owners manual.
That's really all you need to go by.
