Getting rid of my 09' yz450f. I'm set on the cross-country model because of the type of riding I do.. (Desert, single track, MX track)

I rode the KTM on a demo day. I loved it but it felt small and hard to corner sharply. It was mostly things I could change, footpegs, levers, bars. I was supposed to ride the YZ but covid got the demo cancelled.

Do I stick with what I think I know with the YZ or join the dark side with the xcf?

09 yz450 was a good year. If Yamaha just reproduced that bike with EFI and maybe a little more aggressive engine it would beat a lot of 2020 bikes.

If you felt small on the KTM you'll feel even smaller on a Yamaha. I don't have experience of the CRF so i can't comment on that. But the KTM is a "taller" bike with more room for the legs because the gap between the seat and the pegs is noticeably longer on the KTM compared to the YZ. I'm short (175cm) so the smaller feeling Yamaha suits be a bit better than the KTM.

I’d go with the Yamaha. Wide ratio trans is nice, it’s wired for a cooling fan, the suspension is magic, and the engine is fantastic. For offroad versatility, it’s a great choice. It should be getting an updated top end for ‘21 if you can wait that long.

Definitely try to ride one first though. The backwards Yamahas don’t always work for everyone.

I ride my 19 kx450 off-road and I love it. It will handle any chop you throw at it. I’ve gotten in to work pretty good with softer springs and one tooth up on the rear. I couldn’t imagine how well it would work with dedicated valving for off-road. Even in the tight technical stuff I like it.

All I do to convert it to moto is change clickers and springs. And at 66 hours it’s given me no issues. I’ve ridden it on whooped out sand, tight woods, slow technical stuff. For a bone stock 450 you would be surprised how well it does. Also at 6 foot the cockpit is REALLY comfortable.

Yeah that's what I did with my 09' just changed gearing and suspension the bike has been amazing off-road. But after riding the new KTM I could go the same speed as I could with my yz but putting in half the effort. Im 6'3 which has been a hurdle to make comfortable without throwing the bike ergos off. I've pretty much settled on never being able to stand up comfortably.

I would consider the kawi if you want something comfortable. Since you can lower the pegs and move the bars forward from the factory. And I would imagine it would be a good desert the bike is super stable. The bike has never swapped on me or gotten head shake. Also leftover kawis are really cheap compared to the other bikes you mentioned.

Why exclude so many other cross country bikes? Husqvarna, Beta, Sherco, TM, etc?

Its not on your list but for the riding you listed, the 300xc is an incredible bike.

While reading the op I was thinking how much I loved my 09 450f and 250fs, then first post you said exactly what I was thinking.

I'm really torn on selling it. It is in great shape but I am young and I don't want a project right now. If I had the extra funds I would keep it 100%. Located where I am, I ride at sea level and sometimes I ride at 7500 ft. The carb is modded and the company said not to touch it.

Plus if I were to keep it.. I would completely redo the suspension and rebuild the motor ground up. At that point I am close to the price of just buying a bike.

I'm always thinking about what bike to get next, too.

For offroad I think the Yamaha is too heavy. My last several bikes for offroad have been '15 300 XC, '15 KX450, '15 KX450, '17 450 XCF, '18 450 XCF and '18 450 XCF. Still have and ride my 09 YZ250F with a 290 kit and it's a great machine.

I've ridden the newer 300XC and they are light and fun. The 450 has that old-man power though and is still playfull. The Kawi had that mid-range hit like no other but was not as nimble as the XCF.

When it comes down to it it's probably either another XCF or a 300 XC for me. I actually like the Japanese motors more overall but those lightweight KTM's are hard to beat for offroad.

Just noticed you're talking about the 450FX, not the YZ. And the CRF450X. Those are nice machines if you want a street legal converted machine or stick to mellow trails but in the mountains or any kind of technical trails they are way too heavy compared to the XCF. Unless you're a big strong dude with skills the XCF is the clear choice. Also the KX is a great offroad bike, way lighter than the FX and X, and they are priced right. I saw a new 2019 advertised in Oregon for $6000. There are deals out there.
