Hej My Son (13 years) had some hardware taking out today. I am getting different guideline's regarding his time off the bike. One orthopedic surgeon said that the bone was strong enough to ride/race right away. The other surgeon thinks 12 weeks. Before her can start riding. Someone on here that has any experience with this. Thanks.

When I had my hardware removed I believe they told me 4-6 weeks. You have holes in your bones, give it time.

jeg fik også fortalt da jeg fik fjernet en plade at jeg skulle vente 4-6 uger med at køre. 12 uger lyder som lang tid. Jeg kørte efter de 4 uger.

This is Danish.

Ok tænkte også 6 -8 uger brude være rigeligt. Men sjovt den ene læge sagde knoglen slet ikke ville været svag efter skruene blev taget ud og den anden sagde vi skulle vente 12 uger.

Is he racing for a championship? He is young no need to rush it.

When i had a bunch of screws removed from my knee/tibia, i was told 4-6 weeks before doing anything athletic and my doc actually didnt clear me till 8. Your bone is swiss cheese. It might be fine but you risk breaking it again. Wouldnt do it. Breaking a bone is already a lot of damage and trauma. Let alone more bills to pay.

Good advice and I will add that those are still growing bones that need to heal properly.

I have been told 4 weeks and followed that

I’d definitely give it time. I had to wait a year and a half to ride again and don’t regret that one bit. Let it heal!

Ok thanks
He actually won his championship 2 weeks ago
I was just wondering because I was getting very different answers from the 2 doctors.
I was thinking 8 weeks before he starts riding again if everything I good to go

I would wait eight weeks for the holes from where the hardware was removed to fill in...in the meantime I would start doing light exercises, as bones strengthen and buttress according to forces applied to them. The good news is it looks like his wrist joint and growth plates are not compromised. It should be a 100% recovery and now he has a bad ass scar and x-rays!

Kids heal considerably faster then adults.

That being said, you are DAD, and generally what you feel is best is going to be the best outcome. A doctor will offer you guidelines, not absolutes so do what you feel is responsible and right. Ultimately listening to your kids will provide great feedback too...

Take your time with it. I have screws holding my ankle together. About two weeks after I got my cast off, I felt good enough to ride a bicycle. After about a half hour of pedaling, I jumped off a small curb. It hurt so bad, it felt like a bolt of lightening hit it. I was a little over zealous and it was my fault for not taking my time with recovery. My screws were left in. I'm sure his hardware being removed, it'll take a bit longer to fully recover. I was 18 back then.

Better safe than sorry. Error on the side of caution for the youngster.
