That’s an excellent podcast with Glover especially when he discusses the works bikes. Cool stuff.

Glover is a totally underrated rider. Loyalty to Yamaha cost him big time in my opinion. I loved him on the Ktm as well, and winning his last GP was cool as hell. Total legend.

Interesting for a rider to be honest about riding another brand (Smith's Honda) while still being under contract to Yamaha. I'm looking forward to Part 2.

Great interview. He mentioned how he and his dad went to different tracks in California looking for competition to get to better his racing skills.

That was a very good interview, Broc is very well spoken. As Broc mentioned the seventies and early eighties was very exciting in the MX world. Fortunately, I was very much into the MX scene at that time time and weekly we saw new experiments and technology constantly, couldn't keep up! Hence for example, the 1978 as well as 1978 1/2 Suzuki Rms.
Well I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Broc's view of motocross's history so many years ago.Smile

I liked his description of the "Let Broc Bye" season from his perspective.

That’s what I noticed, too. Glover is well spoken and seems very level headed. Of all the podcasts I’ve heard thru the years (Pulp, DMXS, Main Event, etc.,) I don’t recall too many with Gover as a guest.

When I was kid starting MX the stars were Glover, Hannah, Barnett, Bell, O’Mara, Weinert,...and company. It’s great to hear what wasn’t printed in MXA, Dirt Bike, and Cycle News. That’s all we had for MX news back then.

Great interview, looking forward to part two.

I had the opportunity to talk with him at Hangtown this year and he was perfectly happy to BS with me for half an hour, sounding just like he does on your interview. Top notch guy!

Such an interesting interview that I backed it up with watching his Motocross Files. Great era with bikes changing constantly, also kinda funny how Broc spoke about the...pink gear. Good stuff.

Well 40 years have passed so I doubt he's going to be called in to the principal's office......

?

I assume that a ton more of that happened back before we all carried cameras in our pocket all day, every day.

I wish that the sport were still back in that mid-70s stage in so many ways. Glover starting racing at 13 and later and then becoming one of the top racers in the world just isn't something that is likely to happen today (relatively, of course).

Some Glover era OW27 watercooling. Most complicated plumbing system ever for a dirt bike with water through the steering head and out the stem and triple clamps to the radiator.

Interesting bit of trivia on the 77 OW27 rear suspension, the rear shock reservoir is in the front downtube of the frame. This bike here still has the reservoir in place although it is not in use on this particular shock which was a prototype design of Lucien Tilkins.

Glover and Hannah running the air cooled top ends that he spoke of in the interview at Rio and San Antonio. Notice the water pump is blocked off on the right engine case. Maybe a 78 photo and one from Dallas(?) also.

You can also see the shock reservoir hose coming out of the front down tube of the frame. I gave Broc a stack of photos at one of the Texas nationals and he had some good stories about all of them. One cool individual...

Always been one of my favorite riders. His seven national titles is damn impressive. Three 125cc, three 500cc, and a Trans-USA title. The Trans-USA title should stand out. Few remember that series but in my mind it was the true outdoor national MX championship. Everybody raced in the same class like Supercross, and everyone rode a 250, so it was a packed series. Glover won 4/5 of the races to take the title.

Not to forget he maybe should have won the 1985 Supercross championship. He only lost it by two points and a lot of controversy. Many would say even potential corruption.

I always felt like Broc was viewed a lot like Ryan Dungey is today. Incredibly underappreciated rider. In fact, his riding style reminds me a lot of Dungey. Some may look at is as "boring", but it was almost machine-like. Rode 100% in control with very little unnecessary movement. The fact that he rode those stock Yamahas competitively against the factory RC's should make him a legend. Especially that 490.

Moulton was a Kawasaki guy and shortly after that he went back to Kawasaki, now I'm wondering was that just a coincidence?

Heard the promoter of the race raised a stink when it appeared their would be no Jeff Ward in the main. It had been hyped in the ads for the race about the Glover / Ward showdown.

It was always cool to see Broc on his Yellow YZ in pink gear and Jacky Vimond on his white YZ in the same pink gear at the Gloden State Nationals. It's one thing to stare at the pictures in the magazines for hours and another thing altogether to stand on the fenceline of your local track at 10-12yrs old and watch those same guys ripping it up.

Yeah that's what I remember. Moulton was a Kawasaki employee who then worked for the AMA, made this decision, then immediately after went back to work for Kawasaki again. The visuals of it aren't good. Not when every other rider including Broc who broke this rule got DQ, but when it meant Kawasaki losing a Supercross title (Which they desperately wanted) the punishment changed. Ward is obviously one of the greatest riders to ever race and won another Supercross title in 1987 but the 1985 title was Glover's. He got robbed.

Cherry on top; Glover did this on a production based YZ250 before 1986 so he was racing against pure Honda/Kawasaki/Suzuki works bikes.

What I find interesting is that these days all kinds of old pictures pop up of American stars riding other brands of bikes. Most of them I think are from Moto Verte tests in France. It’s just funny because you’d never see it today.

Glover riding some watercooled 500s..

I finally got to listen to the whole interview. Simply outstanding to say the least and I am looking forward to part 2.

I will also be going back to listen to all the past Vital podcasts ASAP. Along with Keefer Testing they have made my "Don't Miss" list of podcasts for sure.

That was a great listen Guy B. I'm looking forward to Part 2. Also, newmann those are some awesome shots you posted earlier.

I had the pleasure of seeing Broc race at Washougal in 1984, he went 1-1 over Bailey that day and they had a pretty good battle in the first moto if I remember correctly. I was a teenager and that was the first big race I ever attended, I remember being so incredibly star struck. I think we found some hotel where most of the teams were staying and I was able to meet and score autographs from Johnny O, the Hurricane and RJ. Totally cool.

Sorry about the off topic, but my first bike after a Honda 50 was a MX100. I'm pretty sure it was exactly the same year as in your photo (79?). Noticed it right away, even in the small image. Too cool.

I met Brock at a KTM dealer meeting several years ago and he was very cool and laid back. Chatted for 1/2 hour or about bikes, the industry and racing.

To me Broc Glover was the twin brother to Hakan Carlqvist, right down to the Als-1 and V-1000.
