Anyone else ever start a small winter rebuild that goes wild? I added up the cost of my build tonight and I can't believe what I spent on a 2004 CR125...the build is awesome and I love how its turning out but damn I could have bought a leftover kx250f or something for the same price lol

My 83 YZ125 build...(Posted in the old school section).

I quit counting once i hit 5x the cost of the bike and past 2x what i budgeted.

Too be fair, i'm making an improvement as i expected to be 4x less than what it cost to build my FJ40 so next project should be spot on!

Never will get it all back out, but fingers crossed i haven't finished or ridden it by the time we move and my wife still signs off on it going into the house.

I think once I retire the bike in a few years I'll just hang it up in the garage haha, now I just need a house with a killer garage.

This isn’t exactly a rebuild, but it certainly got out of hand. Last fall I picked up a leftover 350SXF and really didn’t have any plans to do anything to it, but then November showed, it sits alone and unused and unloved in the garage, Black Friday deals started to show up, and some nice used things popped up, and bam, here we are.

Been there done that..
Try not to look at the cost so much as it will mess with your head. Think of the many days of enjoyment it will bring that is hard to put a cost on it. Enjoy ! Cool

Haha, right can't think of that ever happening.

I started out with a $1,000 for a 03 kx125 over the summer.
It's looking to be about $5,700-6,500 when I'm all said and done.

my 06 rm125.. started off as just wanting to get a bike to get back into riding again. Then came $1000 wheels, frame powder coated, two new top ends, all new motor bearings, micropolishing the tranny, clutch, clutch basket and hub, plates, levers.. the list goes on ?‍♂️

Every bike I buy, I tell myself it’s going to stay stock... that lasts about 2 months.

Man, no kidding. I don't add up the costs as I know I would become depressed.
The hours invested, however, become a point of pride. LaughingLaughingLaughing

Same here, but I think I'm still within the price of a new bike so I don't feel to bad about it. And that's with a kit suspension and titanium hardware.

These full blown factory replica 125s are where the money is going(Mainly the pro circuit kawi's). Don't get me wrong.. I absolutely love seeing them and if you have the money then rock on! I wish I could afford a kits and ti hardware for my 04 kx 125 but I'm on the more budget side of it. I have done more to it than I planned and I'd say I am only half way there.. So I will be in the same category. I have the most fun on my 125 and I do enjoy the build process on it though so it is all worth it!

Shhhhhh, don't make that public. Guys getting too deep into a restoration is how I find good deals.

To be honest, I spent a lot less $$$ than most as I did ALL the labor myself, with the exception of powder coating the frame. Valved the suspension, full motor rebuild, laced wheels, etc. But there is a fuckton of hours into it. Full build thread: https://www.vitalmx.com/forums/Bike-Builds,46/1995-YZ-250-No-frills-no-…

By the time I was through throwing away unusable parts, I didn't have much more than a cracked frame, swingarm, seat base and a set of hubs for this one.

I didn’t have the opportunity to go overboard on mine or else I’d still be trying to build it lol. It would be years before I’d be able to finish it lol. I’m actually happy with it the way it is.

Started with nothing but a frame from a 10 dollar 1979 CR125 mini storage find. Add a set of $3000.00 Fox Forks with $700.00 worth of mods, a $1500.00 set of shocks, $900.00 custom swing arm, $1000.00 worth of rebuilt 1980 CR125 wheels, tires....., complete fresh built engine from the ground up with crank, clutch, bearings, seals, gaskets, Millenium plating, nos piston kit, PVL ignition, Mikuni, pipe, silencer, NOS 79 tank, new 80 model seat and plastics, bars, chain, sprockets, grips, levers, cables, filter....good God where does it end!Smile

Good Times!

That bike looks fantastic from where it started, ask me how I know Laughing I recognize the oversized front rotor and ss brake line, swingarm sticker, the seat, gas tank and cap, and........ that's about it. And that's not counting the parts you can't see lol. I just got the re-style plastic kit and graphics for the 06' that replaced it. I'm about 1/2 way through putting the graphics on and am re-thinking the new super duper radically angled plastic, it's like trying to put a big flat sticker on a curved cheese grader. If I crash the new plastic off it's going back to the 06' plastic haha. I'll post pics when it's done. Looks good Matt !
