I’ll have the option to buy a used 2019 ktm 250sxf in a few months. I have a buddy who’s a B rider (mid lack national b rider) and has a deal with the dealership.
I’ll be able to pick up the bike he returns (2019 250) for like 3k off original the price. So my question to you guys, the engine will be left untouched. So At 40 hours, should I look into swapping out the crank and top end in the next 10 hours of ride time? (Bike will have 50 hours at this point)
And probably get the suspension overhauled to get the bike feeling like new again some time after engine rebuild. How much should I expect to pay for that?
I’m thinking a crank, around 600-700 or so, and top end would be around 400. Or am I way off on the prices? I have another friend who can rebuild engines and works on ktms regularly so labor cost won’t be as high as usual. Opinions? Would I be better off buying new? How long do the new 250fs last this will be my first 4 stroke

So you will pay $6k? I’d get a leak down tear done an that will give you the answer on the top end.

Bottom end should be ok for 75-100 hours easy.

But in the end you need to add up all the costs, suspension service/valving, chain/sprockets, tires, brake pads?

Storm lake Honda has 2017 crf250s for 5k maybe worth checking into? I've been the 2nd owner of a dirt bike ... Don't plan on doing that again. Just my .02 good luck with your decision.

Even with a mid pack b rider id expect that crank to go 100 hours. Focus on your valve train and piston.

Well i have a recent 250 sxf too with 130 hours ! I've never have any problems.

I swap the top end (Piston, top gasket kit, cam chain) every 50 hours (it is a common rule) and of course i could do more but then you take a risk and you might worn out the engine in a wrong way.

Is your friend a rever ? If so, don't wait over the 50 hours mark.

Other than that the new katoom are reliable, it is a great bike good choice,

PS: About the suspension, if you have the money, go with the spring inserts (KYB / Dal Soggio / Ohlins). Way better than the air fork (only major downside of this bike).

Stop telling him to buy a jap bike guys lol To the op I'd say if your getting it at the 50 hour mark the bottom end will be fine. Id inspect valves and adjust them if needed as well as throw a piston in it for peace of mind then reseal the top end. Ride it for all season then do the crank and when your hovering around 100 hour mark. Overall its a very good bike but guess it also depends on if the bike is still in nice condition and if previous owner has replaced things like tires sprockets chain and wear item things like that. Would suck if u buy it then have to sink some money into right away to make it 100% on top of having to get the suspension setup for you. Spring inserts and a shock revalve/respring is best route but having someone just valve the aer forks and respring/valve ur shock would be fine too. Guess depends on how picky with susp u are. The air forks are good but having ridden a 17 450 with kyb inserts they made a difference on small stutter bumps and when track got rough. Just more predictable. If your friend can handle suspension if you bought parts too that would save u some $. Hope it all works out for you.

KTM really interest me at the moment :p but ya that’s a possibility..
so cranks generally last around 80-100 hours playing it safe? Cool. How much can i expect a fresh top end to cost? Oem parts. Valve train and piston/timing chain should be checked and maintenances should prevent blowing engine?

Speaking from my personal experience with this very type of situation, fast dudes are HARD on bikes.

You can expect that bike to be ready for the scrap bin after 50 hours from a B rider

Go with a cheaper leftover yz or get a new leftover ktm or a low low hours used bike as in less than10. No thanks on a full season of racing on a "rental"

Weight of previous owner, how much of a 'revver', and local 15th place b, or Loretta's 10 place b? Big difference.

A 40-50 hour 250F from a guy who finished mid pack B at Loretta’s? I’d pass on that.

Better buy new. By the time you've refreshed it you'll only have saved a couple of grand and you've still got a 50 hour old 4 stroke (and that sounds a tough 50 hours if he's mid pack national Cool .

Either find a couple of grand and buy a new KTM or buy a brand new leftover YZF for the same amount as your 50 hour old KTM.

No way in hell I would pay that much for a roasted 19 model. And if it’s been raced hard with 50 hours for only 3k off MSRP????? Are you kidding me? Why would you even consider this? You could probably by an 18 brand new right now for 3G’s off MSRP. That’s a way better deal.

I may got with the cheaper purchase of a different brand.

Weight is around 175 ish with gear. Doesn’t ride the bike revved out, but occasionally is on the limiter before landing depending on section.. bike is well
Maintained, new oil filters is replaced as per
Manual says, oil changes every few rides... if he were to race LL he’d be liked 25-30th In B class so he’s not blistering fast. I think his best finish on this bike was an 18th in college boy at This years party Ponca.
So when I buy this bike, 40 hours on it, I would probably want to rebuild bottom
And top (with oem parts) and it would
Be fresh? Or is there a lot of other things I’d probably want to go over?

I’m not sure how much Cheaper the bike will be once Mumm post it back up for sale. I was just guessing 3k off msrp?
Base price for 2019 250sxf is 8,999
So let’s say I can pick it up for 6k. Would it be worth it even if I have to throw in a new crank and top end?

If bottom end and top end parts + Suspension redone, if that cost around 2500 all together than I’ll probably just buy new

Yeah man, you might be in around $2,000 for engine rebuild and suspension refresh. Unless your buddy who does engine work can get you a crazy deal. I think you’d be fine with just a top end.

The $3k savings might not really be worth it. I’m sure you can get a 19 either for close to that or maybe another brand?

The used game with 40 hours is tough, really depends on how well the previous own did with mantaince. Maybe try and get him to $5k, then you are looking at an upside even after engine rebuild.

Only way I would even consider that deal if it was no more than 5k and it was taken care of and in fairly good shape. That's taking in to consideration of me doing my own work and getting parts cheaper than most. Imo it's not a good decision. My son is a top novice in moto here in Socal. His 16 Yz250f has been his favorite bike and weve owned most brands and hes rode the newer ktms. He still has stock suspension/pipe with minor mods elsewhere and is very competitive. Good friend of mine rode a 19 yz250f on a Thursday and went and picked a new one up 2 days later . He was on an 18 crf450 up til then. I would find a leftover or low hour 15-19 yz250f and never look back.

^ yea the yzf’s are a privateer favorite for a reason. Bullet proof, huge hp, best suspension... You only talk KTM when you go up to 350 or 450 imo...

Not a bike I would consider buying with the price they are asking for it. Pick up a new left over model. New is always better than used imo. Nothing beats a fresh bike.
