I race in the German Cross Country Championships and did not do so well in the last three races. Fitness, bike, state of mind, etc are all good. The only difference is that I switched from Alpinestars Tech 10 (used them for the last 4 years) to the latest Gaerne SG-12. I did put the shift-lever one notch higher! Can it be the boots?? Or am I over the hill....

I think it's like anything. You just have to do it long enough to get used to it so it feels right. Then again I'm not picky about any kind of foot wear.

Other thing for you to try is some IMS Core replacement foot-pegs that are 5mm lower and 5mm rearward it opens up some more room if you want a big toe box boot.
I had SG-12s for 2 years and really had a hard time with the tall toe box and how much my foot moved around inside there, mainly when shifting up. And as others mentioned, feel was bad in general for everything (pegs, shifter, brake pedal). But they did offer a lot of protection and I never had any ankle issues. I'm using Tech 7s now and like them a lot, but they don't offer the same protection (though they are better in the ankle than the Instincts I've had).
If you have to move your focus to your feet, I can definitely see how that would affect your riding. The boots bothered me for sure, and I didn't want to get rid of them because of what I paid either.
2) change back the obvious, move your shifter back to its original location! Then think about the boots!
