Can different mx boots make the difference?

I race in the German Cross Country Championships and did not do so well in the last three races. Fitness, bike, state of mind, etc are all good. The only difference is that I switched from Alpinestars Tech 10 (used them for the last 4 years) to the latest Gaerne SG-12. I did put the shift-lever one notch higher! Can it be the boots?? Or am I over the hill....

Sg12s have a ridiculously stiff sole and bad feel in my opinion. I can’t stand riding in boots when I can’t feel the pegs.

While Alpinestars Tech 7 are shit for protection and soft soled, I ride better in them due to having better feel on the pegs/brake/shifter than my Gaerne boots. Weird but true.

I guess some people need or want to feel the pegs more kinda like you have gear counters vs non gear counters. Personally the SG 12's are amazing and I feel the pegs just fine and to me their very comfortable and have amazing protection.
I think it's like anything. You just have to do it long enough to get used to it so it feels right. Then again I'm not picky about any kind of foot wear.

Yes if you get a pair with the best power band in them

Interesting. I got the Gaernes because when riding mx tracks with lots of jumps my feet got sore with the Alpinestars. So, yes, with the Gaernes no more sore feet but less feel. The Alpinstars also have poor protection on top of your feet, but maybe I will have to make sacrifices to get up to speed again. Will test next weekend in France at a three hour CC race.

JETT Boots out of Brazil now are a close copy of the A 7 with a not so tall toe box and a replaceable steel and rubber bottom insert that take hard landings great and light weight but has great support and is the most comfortable fitting boot I have ever worn.
Other thing for you to try is some IMS Core replacement foot-pegs that are 5mm lower and 5mm rearward it opens up some more room if you want a big toe box boot.

I had SG-12s for 2 years and really had a hard time with the tall toe box and how much my foot moved around inside there, mainly when shifting up. And as others mentioned, feel was bad in general for everything (pegs, shifter, brake pedal). But they did offer a lot of protection and I never had any ankle issues. I'm using Tech 7s now and like them a lot, but they don't offer the same protection (though they are better in the ankle than the Instincts I've had).

If you have to move your focus to your feet, I can definitely see how that would affect your riding. The boots bothered me for sure, and I didn't want to get rid of them because of what I paid either.

I have a pair of Tech 10's and Tech 7's Love em both. The tech 10's took a few rides to get broke in but after that they offer great feel and protection. Yesterday was my 1st ride in the 7's and they were awesome right out of the box, I did walk around in them to get a little broke in and that seemed to help. I ran Sg12's since 2015 and they were a good boot but also ran big on me and never had good feel to them. Tech 7's sounds like would fit the bill for ya !

Thank you! I will try my Tech10s again this Sunday in France for a three hour CC race and will next week get some Tech7 to test!

Confirms a lot! I go through about two sets of boots a year so I can experiment over the winter in the off season.

1) you didn’t just charge 1 thing, you changed 2 things!

2) change back the obvious, move your shifter back to its original location! Then think about the boots!

Can't do that as you will not be able to shift then (with the SG-12).

I went from Tech 10's to SG12s last winter as the Tech 10's broke and I didn't have another pair with me, I didn't move the shifter at all Sideways
