Lots of opinion posts floating around due to the Rona Boredom Syndrome.
My question is

Who won a title on what could be argued as one of the worst bikes in the class at the time. I'm going with Albertyn winning the MX title in 1999 on that POS Zuke.

My vote goes to Broc Glover on his air cooled YZ 490's winning the 500 title in 1981, 83, & 85 against the best works bikes of the day.

Although a 125 World Title, I’d say hands down, Alessio Chiodi in the 90’s on that yellow & blue Husky..

The CDR yamaha team winning multiple outdoor championships in australia on the worst bike (2010-2014) yamaha. Everyone seems to blame the bike over in USA but these guys made it work time after time.

Emig in 92 when you consider the production YZ 125 was slower than some 80s.

Also Preston in 02...the CR 125 was bottom of the class in the 00s.

Just shows that these teams did a good job and it’s not about the bike in Moto.

Really hard to say worst about a Factory Honda, but i'd guess RC in 03 on the Honda CR250 outdoors was at a pretty big disadvantage to KW on the 450.

I'd bet that our "Factory" bikes being relatively stock had a bit to do with that!

You could argue a lot of the PC KX125s, especially early days, weren't great stock. Mitch said somewhere the 93/94 were brutal.

Same with Ferry's RM125 in 97. I think I read they had a lot of issues with that motor.

Also, Dungey's 2012 and 14 outdoor title – he doesn't have great things to say about that bike now... stinkbug!

Agreed. I was at his live show for Whiskey Throttle and he talked about how even the top people at Honda said that bike wasn’t competitive enough to beat Windham at certain tracks. Yet he still won! But he knew four strokes were coming

James Stewart on his KX125 demolishing a field packed with 250F’s has to be the biggest disadvantage in history. People still don’t think they can be competitive in the C class on a 125.

If not for RC his KX250 days would take top honours. If that guy didn’t prove it was 90% rider 10% bike I don’t know what would. The sport hasn’t been the same since.

In his podcast, Albee said his 94 GP bike was awful, but his 95 USA bike was good, then his 96,97,98 USA bike was a constant development, but the 99 bike that he won the championship on was great.

Those mid 90’s RM’s were some real turds and anyone who won on them certainly earned it the hard way. I rode a 93 RM250 and to this day don’t have one nice thing to say about it, and that was riding it back to back with a 97 CR250. Both of those bikes were shit but in comparison the Honda was amazing. And I apologize to the guy who let me try his 93 RM250 if he reads this!

Yeah, I remember hearing about Emig’s YZ and they Had to throw some hail mary’s trying to get that piece of shit to be capable of winning a race.

RJ winning the 84 250 national championship on a YZ. Yamaha was already running production based bikes even though the rule wasn't in place yet.

I wish Stewart would open up more and do the podcast circuit and talk about that last year on the kx125 and how he rode the 250f at the last national in Glen Helen and won again by a large margin. How much easier it was to ride or how he felt?

I agree with this, I think the Suzuki platform was on an upswing around when Greg won that title. The RM250 today would be a good two stroke bike and a bargain if they just kept producing it the same as how it ended. Much like the YZ250.

Just think if he won the '82 championship as a pro support rider on a stock based YZ. Had a 20 point lead going into the final round, but had the front wheel come apart in the first moto at final round Colorado. That YZ was heavy, had the radiator behind the front number plate.and ended up being a one year only model. My buddy had one. We swapped bikes (I had an '83 Honda) for a few hours. Those bikes couldn't have been more different.
