One error: the 1985 cr80 was also 82.9cc, not 79cc. I know because I owned one as my first bike. I THINK the 84 was indeed 79cc but im not sure.

Hmm, I actually have a brochure that lists it as 79cc, but another one has it as 82cc. I was not aware of the discrepancy. Maybe the motor was slightly different in different markets?

It would have been 79cc for euro markets my 85 U.S. model was 82.9cc loved that bike.

Mine too! It was $1095 at my local honda store. It was my first piston change as well. All by myself from a motocross action mag. I read the instructions. She fired right up. I was in the 7th grade. Nice find.

T Blaze- Bob's Honda in Leesburg is where I got most of the brochures you post online. Got my '79 XR80 there.

That's weird lol. I remember seeing a British brochure that listed the big wheel model as 79cc, so that might be it. I remember also one review stating that the 85 cr80 had room for an overbore but would still remain legal in the NMA class since the limit was 85cc at that time.

Something else weird , Tony: I read all of the reviews back then since I was 13 and pissed that my new 85 model was so slow, and I'd never read of a new rod, crank, or reed! The only upgrades listed were nicasil and new porting. This is very strange lol. We need to convene a round-table committee to investigate this lol.

Just my .02 (which is about what it’s worth), but those mid-80’s CR’s were the greatest looking bikes ever made. The red with the blue seat and white “CR” looked outstanding. Unfortunately by the time I started, it was on to a white frame with a couple years of red plastic, then into the pink era...

I love that pic of the 1980 CR80.
I had the RM that year (air-cooled, twin shock). Both the 1980 RM and CR with the shitty rear suspension were no match for the 1980 YZ80. The YZ had tons of low end, light, and vastly superior monoshock rear suspension, from what I remember. I hopped on my buddy's YZ and I couldn't believe how much better it was.

Here you go you might have to save the pic to zoom in but right by the reed block there it is 82cc on this 85 year.

Probably was as i think all the OZ 80’s back then were 79cc. I know my 1985 YZ80 came with a 79cc barrel but i got an 82cc barrel. My 1986 YZ80 was 79cc as well i think.
DId you get the 1987 CR80 i know in OZ they were limited and my brother was lucky enough to get one. A little bit of cylinder work and his light weight was unfair.
I remember Rodney Hamilton got a works 1986 CR80 from japan in mid 1985. Hell what a bike.

Nah my next 80cc was a new 1990 model. Aus then missed out on the 1991 model CR80s but I then got a 1992 which was my last year on 80s.

The name Rodney Hamilton rings a bell.

My first real max bike too Smile here in Australia it was 82.9cc only real change was the front disc to the 85 and in 87 the seat CR logo changed. A pic
from 87 on my 86 as only a hand full of 87s came to Australia.

I️ had a 1980 YZ80 and loved it but it had zero bottom end. It would rev to the moon though. I️ also had a ‘80 KX which had bucket loads of bottom end but zero top end. The RM80 was the bike to own that year as it was the best all around.

Everybody told me back then that my RM sucked compared to the YZ. The big weakness in the RM was the rear shocks. I remember my friend's YZ80 squirting out of the turns better and having more low end, but it has been almost 40 years. Smile
I loved my RM80 though. I'd love to restore one. I found this one on Vital done by macolmedo.

I vividly remember the 89 80cc shootout where the CR80's top speed was 61 and the other bikes were all around 55. My best friend had an 88 CR80 and I was on an 87 YZ80 at the time. The CR80 ran away from it up top, and it was able to hang with my 90 YZ125.

Another great Classic Steel article. Well done. Also - props for the recent 93 YZ125 Classic Steel post, yet another turd I owned.
