Collarbone Injuries

Edited Date/Time 2/15/2022 8:02pm
Has anyone broken a collarbone and then have a plate and screws put in. Then after your time to heal, rebreak the collarbone or bend the plate I am trying to find out how common this is. Could somebody let me know I am trying to decide weather to keep riding or not.

6 collarbones all left shoulder. Keeps breaking next to previous fracture. Couldn't afford surgery/plates. $30 Amazon sling and 8 weeks and your good to go.

Strengthen your traps
What will "strengthening your traps" going to do? Not trying to be a smart ass I am just trying to figure out my best options.

Trap muscle helps stabilize clavicle, making it less likely to break from a shoulder impact.

I have a plate and 12 screws for breaking my collarbone, there’s still some residual pain and it gets stiff but I’ll take it.

I havent broken mine since the plate was put in... but a plate on the collarbone is no reason to stop riding. Collarbones are really minor compared to what you can break.

Had this done but never bent the plate, broken it either side of the plate, seems the plate acts as re-inforcement

Done both collarbones. Had them both plated, but taken back out two months later to have better motion again. Good as new

Figure 8 brace could take care of this? It was 10 days before I could get surgery and it looked just like that when they started except the loose piece was floating around somewhere else.

After.

Haven't bent it back yet. I have a lot of residual stiffness and you can see the bolt heads moving, but I haven't taken it out due to $$$.

Not a question of if you will...it's when you will. Broke..plated..bent..re-plated. Welcome to MX.

I’ve broken my right one twice. I’ve had to have it plated both times also. First time in ‘08 a plate & 8 screws. Had the hardware removed after 6 months. Last time in 2014 had a plate & 7 screws and left the hardware in for a year and then had it taken out. Sure I have pain in it and I’ve limited myself to somethings that I can’t do as good anymore but I haven’t let it stop me from riding. We all have that fear of crashing & getting hurt stuck in the back of our minds but I block it out. I still ride a few times each month. Can’t let it stop ya.

---an ORIF will always have better re alignment of a complete fracture. that will result in restoration of optimal mechanical function.
---an ORIF will result in shorter acute pain. the bone is stabilized and not popping/moving/shifting. additionally, a nifty little 7 day localized pain pump will minimize discomfort and eliminate the use of systemic narcotics for pain management.
---an ORIF has a reduced incidence of mal or non union.
---an ORIF will heal faster and stronger. See Wolff's law.

*ORIF = Open Reduction, Internal Fixation

Hate to bring up a dead thread, but didn't want to start a new one for this topic. First time collarbone-breaker here.

My question to everybody is, how long after having it plated were you back on the bike? I had my surgery back on November 15th, been doing PT but nothing too crazy as far as weights go. After 13 weeks, I'm assuming I should be good to go, right?

Good deal, that's what I needed to hear! Can't wait for one of these false-spring weekends to come along down here, I'm ready to get back at it.

Id of thought after 3 months it should be well healed. Tim Gajser rode a GP at Riola Sardo Italy not long after having his Collarbone plated. (Was it 10 days or less?)

That's actually what got me thinking about this. I couldn't remember if it was him or Herlings but I remembered that happened and thought, if the docs are telling me 12+ weeks before doing heavier free weight exercises, but these guys are riding like a week after getting plated, are these docs just being super conservative with the healing time?

I would say they are being super conservative & giving themselves some riggle room as people heal at different speeds. If its any reassurance the first time i broke my Collarbone i waited 3 months. On my first race back i holeshot & led for a while, on the last lap whilst running second a lapper cut me off & i went down & the guy in third couldnt avoid me. I shattered the same Collarbone but in a different place. So original must of been stronger enough.

My advice is ease your way back into it. You need to check its healed & strong enough but you also need to build up muscle strength in that shoulder. It will be weaker from lack of movement. Then you need to have full trust in it whilst riding. My experience is that riding injured increases your risks of an injury & the sport is dangerous enough as it is.

I just had surgery on mine to correct it after breaking it 4 times over the last 10 years and never having it plated. They had to cut the bone apart in 2 places and use 2 plates to piece it back together. Hurts like heck but the shoulder already feels a lot better positioning wise. It was even effecting my neck.
