I'm looking a soft terrain tire for a yz250. I don't want to go the full sand paddle because I do ride tracks that do vary from sand but never concrete hard pack.
Price doesn't sway me however I would like something that lasts if I am going to spend the money. I've read the Dunlop and pirelli are the best but don't last, and that the Bridgestone and Michelin are close but last longer.
I don't race so superior traction at the cost of tread life doesn't work for me. Just looking for some info on which tire to look at so I can search for a deal. Are there any good comparison tests out there? Opinion threads are good but every tire has mixed review.

Tire combos
Dunlop mx3s $193
Bridgestone battlecross x20 $155
Michelin starcross 5 soft $180
Michelin starcross 5 medium $185
Pirelli mx mid soft 32 $176
Maxxis SI $179

Try to nab a set of Michelin S12 knobbies. Wear like iron and pretty good in an intermediate condition.

I ride similar conditions. No Maxxis for me. All the rest are good. Pay attention to tire pressures for excellent performance and tread life with Pirelli and Dunlop. The Michelin MH is every bit as good as the MS. avidcycles.com had the Pirelli combo for $119 last week. Go to their website and order or call. They will beat all pricing.

Have MS3s on my new KTM, they seem to be wearing ok (only 5 hours on the bike). I've always had great luck with Michelin tires. My only experience with Pirelli was many years ago but the knobs started braking off as I started riding more hard packed tracks.

Has anyone had the bridgestones? They are cheapest while still staying in name brand.

S12 gets my vote. I've raced more than a 10 race season on my Michelins. Won't run anything else. I've had comparable luck with the Starcross also.

In all honesty, I've never noticed a difference between a new Michelin, and a new Dunlop. It's minor at a level outside of the A Class. My preference is based mostly on how long the tire lasts. I hate changing tires.

I just learned that Metzeler is part of the Pirelli family. I am gonna check out their latest as they will be having combos for big bikes at about 100 bucks for a short time.
