Hi all,
Been here on and off for years. I’ve just moved from
The UK to North Texas Plano/Frisco area. Texas seems really good spot for riding. I’d love to get back into the sport but I’m terrified of getting injured due to healthcare fee’s should something happen. Is there any additional sports insurance you can take out? How do you guys manage the financial risk?
Thanks

Hey Luke, which part of the UK are you from? Most of my family lives in Gosport/Portsmouth England, but I'm Texas born and bred and I live a few miles from you in Little Elm. Welcome to Texas and welcome back to moto.

Not sure about additional insurance, I've got Veterans benefits so I'll be covered no matter what. But even when using regular insurance I just claimed it and there was never any issue about it being a moto-related problem. If anything, just blame it on mountain biking (but I'm not a lawyer).

Do you have an employer funded health program? Or are you on a personal policy?

I live next to you in Oak Point. The Mountain Bike excuse is a no fail for insurance.

Luke, some buddies and I ride pitbikes (mainly KLX140s) due to not wanting to risk injury. It obviously can still happen, but it takes that risk down a bit when you slow the speed down, and you aren’t jumping 100ft. Might be something to think about.
I’m not too far from you, I’m in Arlington. I mainly ride at Burleson MX park. It’s an old school and very tame track. Perfect to go play on. if you ever want to come out and take a spin on my bike, you’re welcome to.

Welcome to Texas broseph!!! Greenville MX is actually owned by a countryman of yours. Great track, probably my favorite track. Definitely not the biggest or most prestigious riding place in North Texas but has a great layout, safe layout, track prep is great, and close to home. Check it out, it's gonna be fun!

Thanks for all your help. I’m on employer funded health insurance. I’m here on an E2 visa so 5 years at least.
I’m actually living at the colony. Only have an apartment right now so no where to keep a bike yet. Something I’ll have to figure out.
I might go and check out greeneville one weekend then and get to know some MX folk.

Am I the only one that thinks the thread title sounds like a movie name or even an old radio show?

Many insurance policies here have "hazardous activities" riders that don't cover you for many sports. They often list motocross. I am pretty sure Blue Cross doesn't have it, but not totally sure. The AMA used to offer it for events too.

That is totally ridiculous. We are not that backward and ignorant. You can't just trade any type of livestock. It's only longhorns, Brahma bulls and quarter horses.

That's true, a full-grown longhorn in the Austin area can get you 2 surgeries and a follow up visit.

Full disclosure, I'M FORM TEXAS...

Ease back into moto via an off-road racing series. On most weekends a race is being held by the local organizers (TORO, TORN, TCCRA). You can even skip the race and spend the day practicing for a simple gate entry free. The series (and riding in general) slow down during July and August due to the heat but local MX tracks like Village Creek and Badlands also have fun off-road sections for a slower pace and a bit of shade.

I wouldnt worry over hogs, but rather Armadillo holes. Hit one of them 5th gear pinned during a scramble or CC race and youre gonna get a helicopter ride.

Just ride for fun an exercise. Dont jump or ride over your ability. You have the Red River north of you. Go ride some trails.

If you’re “ terrified of getting injured “ for health care fees or any other reason motocross is not for you.

Just stop being so English. If you have insurance, it's all good. Go ride and pay the co pay like the rest of us do.

We have some friends that just move here and they won't go to the docs for fear if copay, it's part of normal life.

Cheers people.
I spent 10 years growing up racing, I’m not bothered by the possibility of injury it’s just not fully understanding the healthcare system.
Sounds like I need to grow a pair of balls and just get on with it

I'm in Allen down 121 from you. Read into the exclusions from your health insurance provider like Neal Gamby referenced. If you have any interest in vintage racing we've got a great club, Texas Vintage Racing Club (TVRC), with classes for bikes from before 1975 all the way to 2008. Very laid back and lots of fun.

Wow did someone not even mention Aflac insurance, or another insurance that provides accidental coverage?
