Something else to think about during this crazy time. As much as riding keeps us sane and helps us cope with everything going on getting injured right now would be worse than normal. I work in the medical field in California, and a very high chance non life threatening injuries will not receive the treatment they need until much further down the road. ACL surgeries, collarbone surgeries, ext... are all being canceled and pushed back. Follow up appointments and treatments are gunna get delayed as well.
-I'm not here to say don't ride or do ride, but I felt like it was worth giving the information so everyone can at least take it into consideration.

Its definitely something to consider.

Crashing always sucks and right now riders don't want to end up in an emergency room.

Tony Blazier posted the same general thoughts on his Twitter feed a few days ago. As much as we love riding...crashing is a "when" not an "if" part of the game. With the hospitals at full tilt, and hospital beds at a premium...getting hurt right now would be a far bigger ordeal than normal...IF you could get treated at all!

It's definitely a time to cool our jets and wait to see what happens.

The reason given for shutting down the JS7 race was lack of helicopter availability. They are using this as leverage to shut down racing.

The hospitals are completely overwhelmed in some areas (mine included) so it makes sense.

Very important reminder, thank you. I plan on riding, but have no problem backing it down and riding well within my abilities. Now's not the time to send it boys.

From what I’ve seen in the hospital I work in is, it’s almost the opposite. Hospitals aren’t overwhelmed right now. ER is actually slow because people aren’t coming in for minor things, and the hospital is discharging patients to keep room available for if things start to turn for worse.

Having just recovered from a broken bone, I have a burning desire to ride again but this just made me seriously reconsider that desire. I think I'm going to do a complete bike refresh instead.

We definitely don't need to be part of the overcrowding problem. Let's be part of the "social distancing" solution and go ride alone or with one or two friends. Stay at least six feet apart though! Grinning

Keep it on two wheels and stay safe, my friends!

That's why most tracks have shut down over here, they don't want to put additional stress on the NHS.

Warned a couple of riding buddies about this as well. As it almost happened to me. Broke my scaphoid (wrist) last Saturday. Surgery was scheduled for next Wednesday. Got moved to today due to Coronavirus precautions as they are cancelling surgery’s for next week. Have had a little anxiety that I wasn’t going to get it taken care of. Loading up now though.

All elective surgeries have been cancelled in my area and my friends in the biz in Toronto and Vancouver are saying the same.

This is going to be more than "something to take into consideration" real quick. By my math, we are 16 days from a systemic issues with our health care / hospital system. This, not fatalities, has been the real risk that public health experts have understood from the start. The growth rate in cases over the last 3 weeks has been 31.5% PER DAY. That is a doubling time of 2.53 days. Hopefully this is artificially high because testing is coming online and picking up accumulated cases.

So if you are able to ride, dial it down a little and keep it on 2 wheels.

If I could still ride this would be the perfect time for a total bike tear down complete to the frame. Some guys dread working on bikes but I always found it to be half the fun.

That is a great point and I'm passing it on to customers and riding buddies. Everyone needs to ride within their wheel house.

“It’s just an arm, only an arm.”

Jeff Bridges’ NCO in the movie Gettysburg.

Chin up.

I’m seeing the exact same thing in the UK, it’s kinda scary, calm before the storm and all that

My mom has a heart condition and frequently revs high. She ended up having to go to an ER in Loma Linda the other night and was dreading what she'd find. She said there were rows and rows of beds, and about a dozen nurses...and exactly one other patient in there. She said she's never had so much attention from the staff.

Let's hope it stays that way.

Good luck on the wrist. I broke that bone twice and had surgery the second time. It’s minor but slow healing due to low blood flow so be safe!

Yeah man, I'm going to run some deserted hills but I'm not riding for a while.
Here is my current home gym set up.
Calisthenics and yoga.

That's my biggest fear is getting hurt when this is ramping up. We should be doing our part to ease the burden on the medical system.

Really? I work at Parkland, its a Ghost Town in the ER. We manage and run the Laundry , 150,000 lbs a week. Our volume has plummeted. But we know whats coming.

Yes, we are days away from hospitals being at capacity. I always prioritize keeping it on two wheels, but it's still hard to ensure you don't crash! Probably going to do some bike-work in the mean time.

Interesting. I was told a different story about the hospitals up here in Collin County by my doctor but I haven’t been to one myself so now I’m curious.

I guess I got lucky in a way. I had a get off three weeks ago and shattered five ribs. Did it before this went wild and have basically been "self quarantined" at home. I am not allowing my son to ride. It is killing him because he ended up with a three week Spring Break.

Be safe out there and simply use common sense. We are all in this together.
