Gang,

Woke up to a sad text this morning that our dear friend Gavin Trippe lost his life yesterday in an auto accident. Most of you hear know and the newbies will soon know that Gavin was the man who brought the Carlsbad USGP to life and motocross to TV on ABC's Wide World of Sports from the early 70's to 1986.

We can all thank Gavin for his contributions to the motorcycle industry and motocross in particular. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Race In Peace Mr. Trippe.

Gavin snr. was such a gracious down to earth man but with great vision in promoting the USGP at carlsbad. Inventing Superbikers that morphed into Supermoto and also instrumental in getting the US vs Europe Match Road races that were big news back in the day!

Godspeed Mr. Trippe

The Carlsbad GP had about as much impact on my generation as "On Any Sunday" when it comes to motorcycles (and that is saying a lot.).

As a supermoto rider, an MX rider, and a fan , this is a sad day. I owe this man a 15 year career that has seen me line up with guys that you could only dream of.

RIP Mr Supermoto.

Wow, sad to hear. In my program from the 76 USGP his picture and comments are the first page behind the cover.

RIP Gavin Trippe. Thanks for promoting all those wonderful USGPs at Carlsbad

I agree, watching On Any Sunday when it opened and Carlsbad on Wide World of Sports were two of the pillars of the promotion of the sport for me growing up, and the world.

Gavin never owned the rights to the shows. All owned by ABC/Disney. We had to pay ABC Disney 5 figures to get rights for 1980 and 1977 races and quality masters for our Marty Moates movie..no outtakes exist from what I know.

There is no doubt the impact of both On Any Sunday and those Carlsbad GPs for myself and my moto buds. I was excited and proud to introduce both to any that wanted to know more about our "crazy daredevil sport".
Gavon Trippe and Wide World of Sports brought it all into our living room and it was soo cool!
I would love to have see that clip again of my hero's in slow mo dancing down the Carlsbad freeway with CCR and Fogerty singing and screaming "come on and ride the wind, we're going up around the bend...Yeah!!" Such a cooltl intro to explain what it is that had turned on so many young Americans to this European motorsport.
