Watching virtually all riders struggle in both 450 and 250 classes at Tampa Supercross in the deep loose white sand, it's a good job sand masters like Herlings, Coldenhoff etc don't race Supercross as they would have loved the sand section at Tampa, putting lots of distance into the home riders.
Why do American riders seem to struggle so much in the soft stuff? Is it the unpredictability of the sand or they just ride too stiff in their body positioning and suspension settings? What's your thoughts?:shocked

HYPOTHETICALLY SPEAKING HERLINGS IS THE FASTEST SX RIDER IF THERE IS SAND WITHIN 5 MILES OF THE STADIUM! STAMP IT!

You're either trolling or really fucking stupid.

I would love to see one of the riders you mentioned hit that sand with SX suspension, then tackle a set of slick, square edge whoops like we saw. That would be humbling.

And I love the assumption that our top level guys just go full beginner class when they hit the sand.

Well they're definitely not going to have a premium suspension setup for sand for that small of a section of the track. If they did the bike would suck around the rest of the track . Especially the whoops. Nice cast though.

Herlings would get crushed if he showed up for any Supercross event. Going through sand is a lot different when you have SX suspension.

Edit: you people downvoting are welcome to look up a video of Herlings riding Supercross. It's not pretty.

Plessinger was about a full second faster through the sand sections than the other riders and finished 16th...... Just because a rider is fast in one segment doesn't mean they can piece an entire track together.

Really???

I am a big Herlings fan BUT that was only a small section of the track!! What about the whoopies & rhythm sections? He would be lucky to make it into the main - and that is a dose of reality

He went down when he was midway thru the Moto and got up in last place. He had good lap times but he just got to stay up on 2 wheels.

Ahhhhhh yes, a little sand and here comes the Herlings thread. You know Rob, he has to first line up... then he has to finish the race.

These guys are on stiff supercross suspension and they arent running sand tires. Transitioning every lap from hard pack rythm sections and whoops to soft sand and then back to hard pack sx stuff. Top ama guys do it better by far than anybody. Herlings would have to train and race sx for a certain amount of time to even run near the front. He's a bad cat outdoors no doubt, but a sand section wouldnt make him a player in a supercross race. No need to try and compare such things and riders. You can't.

I think OP might be on to something. Might as well change the record books and have those trophies mailed to their rightful owners across the pond.

Supercross suspension with hard pack tires aren’t exactly a good combo for bottomless sand bud.

Herlings likely would’ve done even worse in those sections than the SX regulars since he’s used to riding sand with soft/sand tires, MX suspension and an MX engine package. You don’t setup a bike for a totally unique feature that only accounts for 10-15% of the entire track.

I have no doubt that most of the Euro guys would have owned that sand section. But, the timing required to hit the jumps, rhythms, whoops are not anything the GP boys encounter or practice for. Apple's and oranges. I have no doubt that many Euro riders could be great SX riders if it was something they practiced.

Aside from it being a small section of the track, that wasn't your typical sand section. That was most likely Florida beach sand which is quite a bit different than a typical sand track.

You realize they would have had to survive the rest of the track so as to get to the sand, right?

I didn’t see Tomac or Webb floundering in the sand, they were killing it.
