Basically how often do you feel like you are riding as good as you are capable of? What throws you off? What puts you on?

Traction. If the dirt is good, I feel like I can step it up without riding defensively.

My routine after arriving at the track seemed to always be the biggest factor.

Practice days:
Right when we arrived, I liked to immediately walk over to the track in my street clothes and watch for about 5 minutes. Look at the dirt, smell the burning gas (this was 20 years ago, all 2 strokes), just sort of get in my mental zone. Then go back to the box van, get dressed and head out. Sometimes we had to go after my dad got off work so I would get dressed in the van on the way there and as soon as we arrived I jumped out on the track. That always seemed to mess me up a bit, I felt rushed and never could get in a flow.

Race days:
Walk the track, get dressed, watch a couple races before mine. Similar to practice days. If my race was first or second, I never felt right.

Plus taking a dump before riding always seemed to help for some reason.

Not very....Sucks used to be a capable rider that I could hold my own against some local fast guys (this was 17-20 years ago). Now I almost am embarrassed to ride as feel people are watching and wondering what happened....getting old sucks, don't understand how Mike Brown can still go so darn fast!

Depends on how often I’m riding. Perfect world, I ride atleast once a week, occasionally twice. When I’m doing that, I feel great! Building each time. There’s also a good bit of cycling in there.
Lately been balancing a heavy work load, two houses and working on one to get it on the market. I’ll go out in the morning every other week and feel like I’m pushing a little bit towards the end. Once all is normal again, it’s on!

I was super constant back in 83, I always finished one spot after the last paying position! Lol

It takes a few weeks of at least once a week for me. I prefer late in the day when the track is rough and empty so I can focus on me. 30 minutes at 95% several times. Smooth equals consistent. Sunday was a great day like that and confidence builds consistency.

Good job for getting out there! I'm "only" 49 so guess I don't have too much excuse if you are out there at 56!!

I have not raced in a long time, but when I made it to my fastest level, I was pretty consistent. I would holeshot or get top-3 starts most of the time, and get passed by about the same number of guys every race! Grinning

For some reason if I don't eat a banana and a cliff bar before the day of motos begins its arm pump city. If I eat the banana and no cliff bar, bam arm pump. Same thing if you flip that. But if I throw down both from my local circle K I'm game for 20's all day long. F*ckin weird, I know. Also a nice rip off the peace pipe before riding keeps me out there longer.

Being consistent going 4,5 is dull and boring. You will have more fun, going to the gate saying I,m the fastest 04 cr125 rider in world- not many out thereSmile . Then try to break the lap record, ripping the whoops. Fly threw the snow fence- don,t hv to pay for damages, just the gate fee. And watch your bike go end over end, over the fence into a pick up truck. Smile

Decent.
The days i'm off it's because i'm trying to go faster not riding the dirtbike as i should.
To be fast i need to think to using the right technique.

I consistently hit the dirt.

Whether I'm riding regularly or infrequently and whether I'm riding great or sucking. People make fun of me fir it. But that just seems to be the way I roll.

At 58 I’m obviously slower than I used to be but I rode 2 30 minutes motos last Friday night.

What has changed the most are the jumps I won’t jump now. I can roll up to any track and say to myself before I start riding “I’m not jumping that.....or that....or that!” And I’m perfectly ok with that plan now.

I only get out a couple times a year now with work and the baby. But i never seem to lose speed. I can just do less laps.

These type of questions are the best. They usually bring the most interesting replies.

LitPro has a lot of cool information that keeps me aware of progression or regression. Granted you need to consider track changing, conditions and energy level. It’s been interesting comparing bikes and suspension settings with lap times.

For practice if it’s balls hot - not consistent.
If it’s crazy with too many riders and skill levels all over the place, lose the flow and tough to get in the zone.

If I ride back to back days 2nd day usually sucks.

Not enough sleep or a round in the chamber, bad day.

Best days are perfect weather, loamy track, nothing negative on my mind, good friends, sweet jumps, cool ruts. Best days ever. (Also fitness during the week but NO hard day on day before)

For racing it takes a good start, top 3-4, everyone right there and some quick passes. If I’m stuck behind a blocker I start to settle in that pace and get frustrated (especially if they aren’t jumping and unsafe for me to jump near). So, yeah inconsistent starts! About 1 of 8 races I feel great.

It doesn't really matter. Some days you feel it and some days you don't. If you want to be doing this in 10 years, don't push it on the days that you don't. Some days, it is better to just ride the vet track and work on something that you feel you are having trouble with.
