If Stewy came back, does he beat Reed?

3/10/2019 7:08pm Edited Date/Time 3/17/2019 5:11pm
Just finished watching that Redbull video of James back from suspension at Straight Rhythm and it got me thinking. Where would he finish? Would he be beating his old rival?

All things being equal, off season testing / prep and overall health without question Stewart would have the upper hand.

Well he took that head digger at 2016 A1 in heats which was comeback and then was then out so it's hard to say. Trying to find heat times for both to determine.

I bet JS7 could still throw down the fastest lap at any SX event to the day still.

Another thing I'll say, since I've been coming to this place there's two things that have been constant

Everyone underrates Reed's chances
Everyone overrates Stewart's chances

He did actually race 3 more SX events in 2016 (Oakland, Atlanta, Santa Clara) but he clearly wasn't riding well from results and DNF's, so if we go back to a fair match up it looks like this.
As for A1 qualifying and heat results between the two which were in opposing heats, James was faster in qualifying by half a second but Chad was faster in lap and average time by a few tenths in heats, so we're really splitting hairs but on count back you are correct. But by fuck all Tongue

An experienced Vitard speaks the truth. And no. And I hate that I am participating in a Stewart thread which I try to avoid at all costs since he retired. The dude was crazy fast and one of our true innovators. Hope to see him in the booth one day.

Oh good god
Shove it up your coit Kurt. Nothing moves the needle more than Chad and James. But I suppose you wouldn't know that.

I have a feeling the next Stewart we might, and I use that word lightly, see, will be his kid, at LL.

Stewart always had Reed’s number, and still would. It’s not a debate as to who will be ranked higher in the all-time great’s list.

If the secret downvoters would like to dispute it, we could always go to the record books. Who has more sx wins? How about national titles?

I highly doubt that. You think a dude like James just disappears without a word to his fans or the moto community will let his kid go through the same stuff he did? The injuries, the concussions, the hate and everything else that came with it? Not a chance. It’s sad when we hear so many retired racers say that wouldn’t care of their kids raced dirt bikes.

Same number of SX titles (2) and 1x MX each in 450. Stew has 2x125 national titles though.
I think Stew has 8 or so more wins in SX. I think he is on 50?

He has more wins in a shorter period, and when both finished the season together, Stew won out. It’s not really debatable.

That was a decade ago. I think the poster asked who would win now. Stewart’s concussions were taking a toll evidenced by his last season on Suzuki. I’m pretty sure Reed would have him covered now.

All of 2016 was terrible for James. The races he did run were horrible by his standards, the others he either crashed out of or was hurt for. His SX finishes for that year were 22, 22, 14, and 22. He had clearly lost a couple steps and had some bizarre crashes even for him. The one at Hangtown comes to mind where on press day he nearly swapped off the track in the final turn. Then during the 1st moto he did the exact same thing in the exact same place only this time he did swap off the track and crash out. There's no reason to think things would have improved. Based on that James Stewart give me Reed all day long.

Love me some Stew, but no he would not. Reed is in race shape, Stew is not. Not to mention the eye hand coordination you achieve from racing. The second Stew would start getting beat he's going to turn the throttle till it stops. We all know how this is going to end up.
Would have loved to see Stew air out that wall jump right before the finish this weekend!!!!

That's simply not true. In the past 5 years they raced SX 11 times against each other, with Reed finishing ahead in 8 of those races.

Bubbas races in 2016:

April 2, 2016:
Chad Reed 4th
James Stewart 22nd

February 22nd, 2016:
Chad Reed 3rd
James Stewart 14th

January 30th, 2016:
Chad Reed 5th
James Stewart 22nd

January 9th, 2016:
Chad Reed 6th
James Stewart 22nd

Reeds races in 2014:

January 4th, 2014:
Chad Reed - 3rd
James Stewart - 17th

January 11th, 2014:
James Stewart - 4th
Chad Reed - 9th

January 18th, 2014:
Chad Reed - 1st (from 6th to first passing Dungey, RV, Roczen and Stewart)
James Stewart 2nd

January 25th, 2014:
James Stewart - 2nd
Chad Reed - 3rd

February 1st, 2014:
Chad Reed - 1st
James Stewart - 7th

February 8th, 2014:
James Stewart - 1st
Chad Reed - 12th (IIRC he crashed last lap running 4th, went down hard in the whoops. Separating his shoulder ending his season).

Without doubt at his peak Bubba was on another planet. But as he got older he lost that edge a bit... he didnt ALWAYS have his number. Infact for the last 6 or 7 years Reed has been on his level or ahead of him basically.

I like Bubba and seeing him at his peak was incredible. Like Tomac beast mode. But he declined a lot faster than Reed did. I dont see how a few years away from competing with these guys could help him. He might run a few hot laps. But racing 20 minutes + 1 lap at those paces isn't something he can do from the couch for a couple years.
