Interesting stat from last saturday’s race in Detroit

So i for one was stoked to see the ET3 I’ve come to know and love finally look like himself for the first time all season last Saturday. He was clearly out to prove a point from the onset and to no one’s surprise, had crazy fast lap times to show for it. 47.563(best) and 48.693(avg) both coming in the first main.

However, i was surprised to see he was actually only the 2nd fastest rider on the track that night. Who was faster? That honor goes to Mr. Austin Forkner with a 47.181(fastest) and 48.033(avg) both also coming in the 1st main as one would expect.

Before anyone has an aneurism i’m not claiming Forkner is faster than Tomac and am fully aware that 450’s race after the 250’s(at least in SX) and ET was in traffic while Austin had clean air all night.

That said, after watching Tomac blitz the whoops and rail corners like a man on a mission, i have to say I can’t help but to be impressed by AF’s being on avg, more than a 1/2 second quicker per lap, sans a couple hundred cubic centimeters of displacement...

Depending on the track, less weight = more momentum = more speed.

From a physics standpoint you are correct. I guess I mean it’s easier to carry more speed through the turns on a lighter bike. Hence why in the road racing world, the smallest/lightest bikes have the highest mid-corner speed

Bingo. If you roll a ping pong ball and a marble the size of a ping pong ball with equal velocity pretty sure the marble is going to roll a lot farther...

Forkner has found the "zone" and is on fire. Yes the track is a little easier that first race and the 450 with its torque and horsepower is more to manage but this isn't the first time this has happened. Really cool to see actually.

I wish we would see these top tier 250 guys race their 250 against the 450's on the opposite coast.

More weight=harder to change direction of travel. More weight means it takes more effort to move it from moving in a straight line.

Track condition. 250 race 3, their best was 49.2. BB ran a 47.520(fastest of the night) in the last race.

Like most tracks nowadays, few obstacles that can’t be done by both 250/450, no matter who is riding it. At least with that on/off tabletop a few of the 450 riders could land on the downside of the tabletop. Nice to see separation by skill on obstacles.

I've always wanted to see someone do it. I could be wrong, but it seems like if AP switch to his 18' winning 250 he'd be getting better results.

It happens. Yes its impressive but not a unheard thing for top 250 to beat 450.

Not the first time the 250 guys ran similar lap times as the 450s.

Monster energy cup is MUCH more high speed than a normal SX. The more direction change the closer a 250 will be.

one thing i noticed was that Fork was tripling out of the corner before the finish every lap, none of the 450 guys did it consistently every lap. i thought that was impressive.

Forkner has to be the most impressive improvement from last year (minus Webb). dude has walked away from the field three weeks in a row.

250s can run with 450s lap for lap on certain tracks, but the question is can a 250 holeshot against 450s? I'm not sure Forkner would ever get a good result if he actually raced his 250 against the 450 dudes because he would start buried in the pack.
