I never heard how this played out, or I totally missed it. Was any of the protest legit or was it totally dismissed?

The gearing is off a QT 50 scooter that Yamaha made and uses the same engine. I'm pretty sure the regear is legal as it's just like changing sprocket sizes on a normal bike

There's tons of stuff you can do to a pdub. Cutting a slot in the intake side of the piston, milling the head and cylinder base. The exhaust pipe flange has a big weld inside that you can grind out. You can unplug a wire and the bike will rev more. This are just a few things I've heard over the years.

And just for the record my kid never raced or rode a pdub so I have never done any of this.

obvious stuff like that, then all sort of shady stuff.

example: PW's are oil injected. they have about a 1/2 gallon tank of 2stroke oil behind the front number plate. the throttle cable splits into two wires, one of them operates a valve/pump on the crankcase that pulls oil from that oil tank, and injects it into the carb.

it's illegal to remove that pump, it's illegal to run premix in that tank, it has to be oil.

there are several shops that amongst their 'LL pw packages' , will mod that oil pump so that it will open and close on throttle operation, but the mod causes such little oil to come out of it , nothing is effected. they then run premix in the gas tank. so basically the oil tank is full of oil, but it's not going anywhere.

oh, and as crazy as that sounds, thats a 'technically legal' mod, as the systems are still in place.

it gets even more shady after that...

I'm okay with protesting if you know someone is cheating, but man don't be so stupid to protest if you are cheating too. That dude got what he deserved.

I feel bad for the children, as none of them likely had a clue they had cheater bikes. They were probably pretty confused.

100%! We are talking about 4, 5 and 6 year olds. They have no say in what their dad is doing to their bikes and yet they pay the ultimate price of watching dad cheat and having their results taken away and losing any potential prizes and sponsors.

Shaving ten thousandths off the cases for more compression, running baby oil in the driveshaft assembly so that it spins more freely..... Just a couple of the things I've heard Dad's have tried to pull off. The list is insane....

Guys come on now, we have to be respectful and not call them illegal mods anymore, it’s insensitive.

The correct term is undocumented upgrades.

A local guys son got protested but his bike was completely legal. He was leading the 1st Moto by 20 seconds when his bike quit on the last lap. He went on to score a 3rd and a 1st in the other two motos. I can’t believe they tear the bike apart and give it back to you in a box. Do you get the protest money to offset the cost of putting it back together?

I heard from a mate that the guy who protested that was running the illegal bike was dumfounded and totally caught by suprise. Apparently not happy with his engine builder.
Like my mate said who uses an engine builder in a stock class

Idk man. I'm on the side of "if you need to mod a PW50, it's time to move to either a KTM/Husky/Cobra 50 or move to a 65."

The cobra/ktm Jr seat height is 2 inches higher than a PW, which is huge for someone with (say) a 17" inseam.

And some dads don't want to buy a new bike with every small advance in skill, especially since the PW comes so intentionally downtuned. Most mods are just reversing the mods Yamaha added to the QT platform when they made the PW (removing the big blob of weld they put in the exhaust, and unplugging the ignition limiter).

if found legal the protested party does receive the protest fee plus the tear down fees
