Seen a few things about Lime being used to dry the track last night, and a few riders getting burns/irritation from it. Is this a normal thing to do, and did they just go overboard with it last night?

I saw Roczen post this. Surely it was too wet for it to make any difference? Can understand when the soil is borderline but last night it can't have made any difference.

Lime can cause irritation. Some people have skin that is more sensitive then others so it's dose depending..

With conditions like yesterday, lime would have been virtually useless.

Yep anything aluminum get destroyed and prolonged contact with the skin will even cause irritation. Poor call to lay that down in my opinion.

I would use sawdust or small wood chips but what do I know. Never been a fan of the lime.

Quicklime is often used for soil stabilisation… Ordinary lime is for agriculture.

Shouldn't they not be able to use it because it has been known to cause cancer in California and they were in California? Somebody messed up bad.

Add to it that some stadiums still store the dirt for use next year don’t they? Now they get to start with screwed up dirt. Heaven forbid they just plan for a little drainage in open stadiums when rain is in the forecast? Grade things to a couple spots where it could be pumped out. Would still be muddy but could get rid of some of the standing water.

This storm was forecasted 2 weeks out before the race, isnt that enough time to get a couple of truck load of sand to cover trouble areas of the track, instead of using gnarly chemicals that do nothing in a heavy downpour? seems like an easy fix.... we are in San Diego, sand doesn’t seem like it’s in short supply.

Crazy amount of rain on a stadium full of dirt minutes before a national broadcast. Yet they didnt even have a one minute delay. And it actually ended up being a decent race. If your local track git hit with that rain it would take em a whole day or more to get it up and running.

Kudos to the track guys it always blows me away how good they are at their job.

I've never understood why they don't do this more... Like someone else had said in another thread, how can there be standing water on the straights...?
Find the deepest point and pump it out, I was doing that at 5 years old!

Lime is in most SX dirt because it hardens the dirt. Lime used to soak up water or harden dirt in a downpour is just stupid.

There was almost no rain until about 4:30, the track actually looked pretty good mostly dry(ish). Then the rain came HARD. The only practice/qualifying was a 5, there was nothing they could do with that amount of water that came before practice. It really was a worse case scenario.

Are you high? Smile

Where would they get the money to pay the fines for pumping water out of a CA stadium??

they should have sloped it just a little and then put in a drain or just pump it it, its not that hard.
and if they knew when the rain was coming move the practices up an hour earlier fix the track and then tarp it till the first heat

Obviously they didn't want to put sand on the track in preparation for rain giving the "Euro's " another advantage for the win and cop the same grieve as Red Bud management and track builders. Just saying

I wonder if they ever mixed that into the Oakland dirt, we had quite a few wet years. When I got done with my races on amateur day Sunday I was coughing like a MFer and constantly felt like I had crap in my throat, I wonder if I had a little bit of a reaction to it or something.

What works on an outdoor motocross track does not necessarily work on a supercross track.

Adding sand to dirt sitting on top of a hard surface (plywood or concrete) would cause it to be softer and rut down to the hard base faster. It might help keep the dirt from being as heavy and gummy, but the amount that would have to be used would be prohibitive and could make the dirt harder to build with if they reuse it and it doesn't rain.

Well, they clearly overdid it with the water. Wink

If a drying agent was used, it would have been before, after the build and before they pulled the plastic and the downpour happened.

You do see it on the track fairly often, but I'd be really surprised if after all the rain we got that anyone would have noticed. There was so much water that even by the mains there were ponds by the scoring tower that were nearly knee-deep.
I can say from being in close proximity, it does irritate your eyes and lungs.

Nasty stuff. Bet the factory teams throw pretty much the whole bike in the scrap container after this one lol.

They knew when the rain was coming, why didnt they have qualifying early before the rain, then tarp it during the rain . It was very light or not raining during the night show.

I kind of agree with this. They knew well in advance and built the track really early. Could they not have sourced some sand to mix in during the build? Once it is built and packed there is no coming back to add sand really, it will just get washed off/splashed off.

Having been to all of the recent Seattle races, in 2017 they had a darker sandy/gravel mix that handled the rain pretty well. Then in 2018 the dirt looked more like the 2014 and earlier dirt, and it had much more rain to contend with as well. It ended up being a real bog and honestly a waste of money to watch live (IMO). I really hope with Seattle being 2 weeks earlier this year (March 23) that Feld and Dirtwurx take into account the even higher probability of a very wet day and come up with a better solution for the dirt.
