What's a top mechanic like Anderson's or Hill's bringing in?

I don't know the exact answer, but I know it's absurdly low for the amount of work they do. Can't believe some of these guys do it, especially for lower level riders.

When Tony Berluti was on the PulpMX show recently, Matthes cited how Berluti formerly said he was definitely retired as a mechanic and had zero plans to come back, so the fact that Mike Genova was able to convince him to wrench for Brayton on the MotoConcepts team this year, they must of thrown a ton of money at him. Tony didn't say the number, but Matthes guessed probably around $100K, which Tony would neither confirm or deny.

That sounds like a great salary, considering you give up Saturdays, Sundays, Family get togethers and birthdays, you have to take Holidays when you are told, no sickies, what a life, not!.

For the expectation of working hours, travel, and loss of time with family I couldn't do it for less than 100K.

From what I understand...It’s a job with a high level of intrinsic value for a uniquely talented, and very passionate person. Not a ton of extrinsic value, even at the most elite level. It’s a “dream job” for the right person, often times “dream jobs” require a high level of sacrifice in one way or another.

If you enjoy what you are doing you will never work a day in your life.

I think that applies to every mechanic.

A good team will be $36-42k yearly if your rider is between 5-16th, if u have a good rider u can make around $10-20 k in bonuses. Obviously like the racers, those top mechanics (probably 4-5 of them) make something near 100k n maybe more from bonuses ($150k)

It’s a rough part of the support but at least some of them do get a good deal. We really need more guys like mike, outside sponsors who care about the health of our sport and making it professional.

The ones that are really underpaid are the practice mechanics! They have to do all of the routine maintenance almost daily, fix anything that breaks, keep up with parts and all of the hours on the bike and do this to suit the riders schedule. I guess this is why you see so many fathers that fill this role!

This is the silly follow-up question people always ask when salaries come up on this forum. When you're looking for a job, do you not care what the paycheck is? If you're like most people, you do, and you do a little research to learn your market value.

It seems like salaries are public in every other professional sport. I think it's a bigger secret in this sport because the numbers are so disappointing. People should know that before pursuing the infamous industry job.

Do you know all public workers have public salaries? I see you're from Ohio:

Ohio State University salaries
Urban Meyer, head football coach, $4.61 million
Thad Matta, head men's basketball coach, $3.39 million
Raul Weiss, clinical professor/ cardiologist, $1.98 million
Eugene Smith, athletics director, $1.98 million
Kevin McGuff, head women's basketball coach, $1.19 million
Christopher Cullen, general counsel, $1.27 million
Michael Drake, president, $1.04 million

Are they doing better than our top 7 pro riders?

You have to respect anyone willing to sign up for that job. Lots of traveling and time away from home along with crazy hours and crunch time on race days. I enjoyed hanging out with and helping the kids with the Eleven 10 team several years back at Freestone. All young guys, living the dream out of that old flat black box van. Hopefully they've worked their way up over the years.

They also get bonuses from there riders. Didn’t Webb pay his mechanic like 500k after his title? Could be way off but that’s what I read on vital a while ago

If he did 10% it would likely be $50,000 not $500,000.

I doubt Carlos Rivera will be able to retire off of the money he's made so far as a mechanic, but I'd be willing to bet that Dungey and/or KTM took good care of him for his role in Ryan's titles.

Do the teams pay the practice mechanic or does that come out of the riders salary to organise that part of their program. (I guess it all depends on the level of rider, team and contract negotiated).
I see in Adam Cianciarulo vlog he is just showing up to tracks and his bike is there prepped and ready, then he just leaves and it’s all taken care of. (That’s everyone’s dream right? Haha).
As said a lot above I don’t think the pay would be enough unless your taking the win/title bonuses. Being that the sport is so small and there are not too many jobs available, there is probably not a lot of pressure to over pay for these roles. Someone would always be willing to step in and do the job.

Yes, riders typically pay their own practice mechanics unless they're on a bigger team that provides that kind of thing

The role of mechanics these days is much different than it used to be. Matthes bring it up a lot. It used to be that the riders main mechanic was responsible for ALL aspects of the bike. Now a days, the major teams have a dedicated motor guy, a dedicated suspension guy, etc. Not saying that all the Brian Kranz and Carlos Rivera's of the world are JUST doing remedial stuff like grips & graphics.. I know everyone on the team is still busting their asses, but factory mechanics definitely aren't taking care of all aspects of the motorcycle themselves then driving the team box truck across the country the way guys like Dave Arnold and Brian Lunniss did

If he got 100K on top of his salary let's just say another 100K per year minus taxes end expenses he'd still need to work for a longtime.
