Heat exhaustion is a bad thing. And it has less to do with fitness than it does to basic physiological makup. Some people are just more prone to it than others and that's all there is to it. And once a person has had it, they're MUCH more prone to get it again.

Interesting, why would someone be more prone to succumb to it again?

It's true. They are more prone the second time, according to a neurological Dr. at the Kettering Medical center.

I have had heat stroke. It sucks and takes a long time to recover. You are more prone to it after the first time.

I don't know the reason for it, but I worked at a gas storage field that had a bunch of very large gas compressors, and one of the mechanics got heat exhaustion really bad (the compressor buildings routinely were 120 degrees inside in the summer). After that, he couldn't work in the heat at all or it would happen again. He had at least 4 episodes where we'd have to call an ambulance to come get him and start IVs. Eventually, he had to take disability - he just couldn't do his work at all unless it was winter time.

Heat exhaustion is a lot like concussions; once you get the first one it's easier for the next and so on. Conditioning does help but it's not guaranteed. I had it happen to me 12 years ago and I still cant take the heat like I used to. I was passed out for 45 min. had 2 saline bags run through me, drank 2 quart size Gatorades then filled them with water and drank them both and I didn't take a piss until the next day.
