Glad Mike is okay. We lost Nicky Hayden to an inattentive driver while riding his bike. It's a Jungle Out There.

Man, Mike is one luck MOFO. As in lucky to be alive. Driving on the road these days with all the distractions is like dealing with drunk drivers on the road X 1 million. NO thanks. I have often thought about a road bike but no freaking way. We think MX is dangerous, shit.....ain't nothing compared to this. I will stick to organized practice days, and mountain biking trails and off road areas where people have both etiquette and know the rules of the jungle. These things mitigate the majority of risk outside of whisky throttle!

Good to see he is home having dodged a bullet-get well Mike. Not sure if you are making it up to the great white north this year for the nationals but you have been a fantastic addition to our series.

Thankfully he will be ok because that bike is wrecked! I’m hoping they catch whoever did this. What kind of person leaves someone to possibly die along the road?!

As a guy who routinely rides 15-20K km per year, holy shit Mike. So sorry to read this, literally every cyclist's worst nightmare is getting hit by a car, let alone one going 70 mph. Reading the injury list, one has to think could have been much worse (but we can say that about any crash). Heal up well Mike!

On a semi-related note, I am still recovering from hitting an off-leash dog (in a park that is leash on only) that jumped out in front of me when I was riding on a gravel trail in May. Was doing 30 km/h (18 mph) and took a heavy concussion from a dirt nap, scapula fractures, rib fractures and a lot of soft-tissue damage to my left shoulder. Still can't work out how I ended up so badly injured from this one.

Glad to hear he is ok. I switched to gravel and dirt last season. Too many asshole hillbilly’s in pick ups thinking it was funny to run me off the road.

Glad he is OK...but WTF is he doing riding on a highway? Seems pretty fuckin stupid to ride on a highway with the people on the roads these days. Is that even legal?

Speedy recovery Mike. Rear facing camera under the seat maybe would be invaluable in these situations.

In Florida, two lane roads are state roads and when out in the boonies, since its not a residential road, many call them highways

It's not like it's I-95 or I-40

Also, "US HWY 1" runs all the way from Miami to like Maine, in many rural areas, it's just a two lane road

Heal up MA800.

Could have been so much worse. Really is telling when a bunch of moto dudes are like "riding on the road? F that , too dangerous!!!"

I've done many many thousands of miles training on the roads. Gave it up about 10 years ago when I quit road racing because the training miles on the road were too dangerous despite living in one of the most bike friendly places in the US with plenty of quiet backcountry roads.

I recently returned to road riding during the lockdown since our mtb trails got shut down and to rehab a fractured knee from a moto crash. This is a good reminder to retreat back to the dirt, as if the makeshift memorial for a fellow rider that I pass on every ride isn't reminder enough.

Sadly, the percentage of hit and runs in these scenarios is super high, which is ironic, because hitting a cyclist in the US rarely results in more than a couple hundred dollar fine unless it was a drunk.

I guarantee the POS that hit Mike either has outstanding warrants or was under the influence.

Mikey, I love ya and I know you're gonna be alright. This is just another test in life. You've passed them all and you'll pass this one, too.

I look forward to seeing you at the track...soon.

Until then, You & Danielle and the entire family are in my family's prayers.

Manny

If its a small town i wonder if law enforcement could pull up DMV Records and see how many Red Chevy trucks (05-09) are registered in the area. If it were a family member i would personally go after every lead until finding the fucker who did this.
They deserve to be prosecuted and catch a felony hit and run charge.

Man... too many stories like this of road bikers getting hit by cars. Heal up...

Sorry it happened to you MA.

Let's find this prick that drove off and vote to neutered him. Or better yet run him over with his truck while he's on a bike.

Had a neighbor in Tennessee that was a professional road biker and he would tell me stories of how people would throw apple cores and bags of McDonald’s at him and run him off the road. He said this is how I’m gonna for one day and sure enough he was killed 7 years ago hit from behind and the driver took off. They named a law after him in ten that says you must stay 5 feet away from bikes but bunch of red necks in the south so it doesn’t really matter. Some idiots pulled up next to one of the Honda team mechanics who was wearing a backpack and grabbed him by the backpack and drug him down the street in HB not too long ago. With everyone on their phones while driving these days I can’t think of much you could do more dangerous.
