Heading up to the shop here in a couple hours and my buddy is picking up a new CRF 250. He's getting a good deal on one of the 17's sitting there.

Any major / noticeable changes between the 17' and 18'? I know the 18' has a little less bottom power and more on top compared to the 17'....anything else? ML? anyone?

I would pay $1,000+ more for a 2018, yes. That big of a difference. Completely new.

17 is the old chassis/motor, 18 is all new, just like the recent 450 update.

E start and spring forks and one extra header are the highlights.

One more question.....the 17' is the last gen of that chassis , when did that chassis come in? 14' - 15'?

JeffBro, yeah we're talking two headers, two cams, it's making some high revving HP like the other ones didn't.

2017

2018

Jeff... the 18 is completely new motorcycle with a completely redesigned chassis, engine, and exhaust. It has 2 separate headers, spring forks, DOHC like the KTM!

The 250 bike of that generation came out in 2014, yes. As usual the 450 was changed the year prior.

Thanks for the quick responses guys! My buddy isn't really a racer and mostly just play rides at his home / private track , so I'm not sure which one he'll choose. He said he wanted to take a closer look at the Husky / ktm's and the Kawi as well....so who knows what he'll decide on.

Hey Jeffro, seeing your from good ol’ Oregon what shop are you buying from? My brother is looking at buying a bike but not sure where to go.

I’ve bought my bikes from motosport Hillsboro, but it’s kinda a far trek for me (coming from Oregon City).

Yeah pretty much my whole group gets our bikes from Motosports now days. But depending on stock and so forth , some of us have had to buy from different places , like Bill's down by Salem or Pro Caliber. I myself have been buying from Hillsboro motosports since Gary Rowe owned it , so I have a good relationship with those guys and they have always treated me good. What kind of bike was your buddy looking to get?

Only the keen eye can see the difference. Kickstarter looks a bit different but other than that, BNG jeffro.

If buying new, and there's only a grand difference in price, go with the new model.
saying that, the 17 is a good bike, and may suit your friend better as a play bike at his home.

If he's just going to ride for fun and play around, I'm sure the 17 will be just fine for him. I think guys get way too caught up in "all new" bikes like they are changing the rotation of the earth with each rendition, truth be told a ten year old bike would be fine for pretty much anyone if they sold it brand new again. Not to mention, first year bikes can have some issues, so he might be better off with a tried and true model if he doesn't want to mess with any possible warranty issues. I don't know how big of a deal money is for him, but I think he can get a little better deal for the 17 and save some cash, and for some just riding for fun at a lower skill level the new bike isn't going to be worth it.

I bought the 2017 KTM 250SXF because I couldn't wait for the 2018 CRF250R. Im happy because the KTMs are still beating the Hondas in the shootouts....lol

And for the record I really wanted a Honda.

Well , a small update. My buddy ended up not getting off work in time to make it to the shop. He has like 5 different bikes in mind. But thanks again you guys for all the info. I told him everything you guys said , and I think if he does go the CRF250 way , he'll be getting the 18' model.

I liked the 17 KX250F enough I bought another from Gabe at Motosport on Thursday. You know what I like best about it besides the $4995 price? It feels like a Honda. Huge improvement from the 15 we had. Really good bikes....

Tracktor that is what I thought too typically the Kawasakis are throw away bikes after a year they just don't seem to last but this bike seems a lot better than previous years and it you're right it does feel a lot like a Honda. One of my buddies just picked up the new Honda 250 last night he says it has the same feel that 18 Honda 450s have which would probably suit taller Riders a little bit better than they have in previous years

Call Gabe at Motosport. Solid dude to deal with and that's from a guy who doesn't like salespeople.......
