The Shop
My day started off awful. I went down pretty good and unknowingly smashed my radiator back which caused all my coolant to spill out. My bike ended up seizing at mile marker 9. By the time track officials got there and pulled me back to the pits to pass off my transponder we lost a good hour and fifteen to an hour and a half of time. We basically started 2 to 3 laps down.
We maintained consistent and were able to claw our way back to 46th overall. My team did awesome. Two of the guys who’ve never raced in their lives were surprisingly good. They were putting down 32-34 minute lap times, which was awesome. One of our guys incredibly underperformed though. I’m still shocked by that.
Anyways, it was definitely a blast. I’ll be doing it again next year for sure. Admittedly it was a lot harder than I thought. It was my first time riding at night and I really enjoyed it. We gained a TON of time back at night. I was able to log a ton of laps while other guys rested and my times were pretty consistent with the top 5 teams. It was harder riding one of my teammates bikes, I had a difficult time getting used to the suspension and controls.
We actually lost out on a lap too. The guy who finished the last lap thought they gave him the checkered flag when they actually gave him the white flag. So he pulled into the pits and thought we were done. We didn’t realize it til me and another guy walked to the finish line and saw the leader take the checkered flag. By the time we were able to get one of our guys suited up and out there they had shut it down and wouldn’t allow us to take the final lap. I guess a mental error like that is normal after such a hard event.
I can’t wait to do it again next year. We’ll be out looking for redemption for sure. Our goal this year was to take top 15 overall-which I believe would have happened if not for my bike blowing up and losing out on the last lap. I’ll be setting my goals a little higher for next year though. We’ll be pushing for a top 10 overall!

He was struggling a little.
I ran with Empty Pockets Racing in 30+. The team was Mike Kochman, Kevin Coffee, Sean Carr, Russell Landes, and myself. Russell, Mike and I are eligible for 45+ classes, and Kevin and Sean are vet riders. We ended up 15th out of 23 in class, and 52nd overall. This is after I broke a shifter 4 miles in, had to unjam my transmission and set it in 2nd, then got poured on from before the matrix on...limped it in to change riders a lap early. Russell was the only one of us who had done that event before. So not so bad for 4 guys who never raced or rode at night before. Had a blast and were already scheming for next year
