Danny was something else. First time I saw him was a local indian Dunes race riding the wheels off a KTM.
Was at the 79 Saddleback National. The famous double jump he did was gnarly. But I was blown away how he rode wide open up against the fence all the way up back to the top of the downhill, turn left and make a full throttle run off the ledge. It looked like he was going to flat land it every lap.
That 79 Maico didn't have a chance.

I got roosted big time by Magoo at Binghampton New York while spectating. My brother and I were sitting in lawn chairs leaning back with our feet up in the fence drinking beer at the bottom of the downhill they had that had two parts to it. You could see the riders come into view at the top and then they would go out of sight for a second and reappear coming down the hill into a nice off camber about 10 yards up the hill from the fence. We see Danny come into sight at the top and then disappear for a second. When he reappears he is out of control standing on the front wheel coming right at the fence. We scramble like cartoon characters falling out of our chairs thinking he is about to run us over, he some how saves it grabs a handful right at the fence and pelts the living hell out of us and is gone!

It's so different now- the bikes are so good that hardly anyone can ride them to their full potential.
The 450's are de-tuned to make them more ridable.

Magoo was all that and a bag of chips! WFO every class, year, bike, or track anywhere in the world. We had "BOO" Stichter here in Colorado that was the same for a bit.

How cool is that pic- the 'Magoo' name on the legs and a weird old KTM! Never seen that before and looks like he is hammering the thing, as you would expect.
Thanks for the posts- will have a good read of the article also, very cool to see Magoo is still adored!

RIP hero. I loved an article with a pic of him lifting a portion of his truck. And MXdN obviously.

Imho he holds the best motocross record of all time. His sweep of the Trophy and Motocross Des Nations weekends is unparalleled.

My mistake- thought it was a pic of him on the KTM mentioned previously in '79.

What year did he race the CZ? Never knew he raced even CZ- he rode alot of different bikes it seems and probably wrecked them all! ahah

I remember one year when he was racing at Carlsbad for Honda, and bumming a pinch of chew from one of the fans outside the fence. "Hey, Skoal brother..."

Those 2 are the best. I remember watching Superbikers every year. Whatever was going on stopped to watch that.

At Red Bud pre Laroccos leap the wall that is the take off ramp was there with a jump at the bottom and a left turn at the top. The riders would hit the jump, land up the hill a ways and then kind of bounce over the top and turn left to head back down toward where the sand whoops are now to a big bowl turn. I'm standing there watching practice and around comes Glover with Chandler in tow. Broc does the usual thing, hits the jump and bounces into the face of the hill. Unbeknownst to Broc, Magoo has decided to pin it and attempt to jump to the top. Broc clears the top and initiates his turn just as Magoo lands next to him and blows through the turn! I remember Glover looking over and shaking his head like wtf was that lol!
