CRF450L: Pssst, hey, over here, have you heard about Honda’s street legal Motocrosser?

I haven't looked through part numbers but I would expect a more durable piston is fitted with possibly 2 compression rings and the compression ratio is lower. Shaving the cylinder base is the cheapest trick to bring some of that back up and can be reversed by using a custom gasket made of thicker material or simply using 2 stockers depending on how much you shave off.

Check the parts fiche...it's probably just a lower compression piston versus the X...?

I remember someone made thinner head gasket for the crf450 to raise compression, I used one on mine.

the pic that was posted with the FMF was one of our bikes.

it’s running a little lean, but it’s on the stock L ECU.

we also eliminate the rear end and it saved 10 lbs.

I know some have been critical of the 38 hp number, but on the exact same dyno a 18 CRF250R made 36 and a 19 CRF450R made 53. So that’s actually pretty dang good considering it’s an emissions compliant bike.

I want one. A Rally version would be awesome.
Red Moto Italy already found. 5hp, more to come... Don't know when / if you messing around yourself if it has consequences for the warranty / 30.000 km service.? you need something from an insurance policy like with Car Chip tuning who take over the warranty or something...

Agreed. My old CRF used to dump a lot of fuel into the motor oil when it was below freezing outside. Installed a thermostat and it solved the problem.

Too bad Honda or KTM or someone hasn't put anything like this on showrooms for under $15k:

lol street legal motocrosser. These things are overweight, underpowered turds. Look at a Husky FE501. 60+ hp at only 270lbs full of fuel. That's a real dual sport bike you can call a street legal motocrosser.

In street trim, the HUsky is just as plugged up as the Honda. Around 40 hp. The off-road versions are supposed to be monsters though.

I rode a 450L this weekend that was set up real nice - excess fender crap all cut off (saves weight), Yosh pipe (w/ stock ECU), proper dirt tires, suspension work. Here's a pic of the ol' girl. Thing rode amazing!

IMO, after they were first announced the 450L's got a bad rap regarding the weight and HP claims. I rode the bike in some tight 1st and 2nd gear single track with some nasty rocks. The extra weight actually helps charge through the rocks compared to my lighter '18 500exc, which sometimes deflects a bit in rocky stuff. BUT, when I did hit a big rock on the Honda and got kicked, the extra weight was noticeable. I did find I could steer my KTM better with my feet/legs while standing compared to the Honda. Definitely some trade offs between orange and red. Both great bikes.

Power was smooth and more than enough. It ran fine with the Yosh pipe, besides a little popping on decel.

Great looking bike! That's about what i figured the review would be. I'd like to ride one setup like that back to back with my 501.

Most dyno passes I have seen are around 38 hp, not 40 or more. They did a great job of plugging the shit out of that bike, then locked the brain to make it a huge PITA to upgrade.

I got a chance to get in more seat time with my buddy's 450L and was shocked by the lack of power. A DRZ400 feels about the same for yank (stock vs stock), and doesn't have the ridiculous 600 mile maintenance schedule.

Honda did a great job of dumbing the bike down for a Joe-Blow-Mainstream type of rider, but for the real enthusiast it just doesn't have much power. I know that is mostly due to gov regs, but still, damn....

Here's another test FYI.

https://www.cyclenews.com/2018/11/article/2019-dual-sport-shootout/

Stock vs. Stock isn't really the way they test these, the tires on all but the Beta are worthless for real dirt riding, and all but the Beta are plugged up power wise out of the showroom. Order the Beta BYOB with the correct springs and it is no contest.
