*** this is not meant to be a knock @ fox/any other helmet maker. this could happen with any manufacturer. but i have kids that ride, and i think this is important.

bought a pair of new Fox V3's for my sons this spring. great fitting/looking, kids were excited about them. given they are 6 and 8, of course they wanted to put them on and run around inside with them when they got them.

strapped helmet on my 6yr old's head a few times for him. on about the 3rd time... helmet strap completely falls out...

not like became loose, fell on the ground.

it appears that where the strap goes through the retention loop built into the shell, instead of a double row of stitching, they hit it with 1-5 single stitches, at most. it took about 3 on and offs of the helmet for it to fail, meaning, on first try, it seemed fine. but, it was secure enough that under normal conditions, i would have sent them out on the track with it.

i cannot even begin to describe how poorly this could have gone for them in a crash if not caught

the reason, again, i'm posting this, not to knock fox in any way, because i actually replaced this helmet with another fox helmet. it is to CHECK YOUR GEAR thoroughly before using it, ecsp high risk fail items like a helmet/strap.

dad rant over.

oh, and i'm sure people will ask what i did. helmet was purchased from rocky mountain atv. i called them and sent pics upon the failure. they wanted fox to make the call on what to do (RM was definitely aware that this was not a good situation/wanted to handle it). sent me a return address label, i returned it. i ordered a new helmet. never personally heard a single thing from fox. about a week later a credit on my statement appears for the original purchase price from rocky mountain.

Damn! Glad it happened at home in the house versus being on the track! I'm checking my sons helmet tonight. Thanks for this!

Good catch, OP!
Shoei, 6D, and Arai manufacture helmets.
That is all they do..... Specialists are my jam, be it a doctor or a mechanic. Same for gear.

the irony of this, is i'm the same old moto guy that swears by the one's you just listed, but i went with a gear manufacturer helmet for the FIRST time in 25+yrs of moto, and this...

not to say they are all like that, but man alive, that was a bad first taste.

the problem ive run into, is the main helmet guys dont offer small/mini class size helmets. adult XS is normally as small as you see. thats a problem to me.

6D does not manufacture their own helmets. They are designed by them, but built/manufactured in China along with the Bell, Fox, Troy Lee etc. I heard that the top of the line helmets were even manufactured in the same plant in China, not sure if that's true or not though.

it's my understanding that shoei and arai are the only remaining non chinese made manufacturers of readily made usa helmets. i could be wrong. it's also fairly common that the same chinese manufacturers are making competing gear, whether it's helmets or actual riding gear.

Shoei and Arai are both helmet manufacturers with their own dedicated factories. Unless something has changed in the past few years, 6D is a helmet brand that is manufactured by Topkey, a Taiwanese composite manufacturer. Topkey also makes helmets for Bell, Fly, Fox, and many others. Again, this information is a few years old, but I doubt that these brands have switched manufacturers.

Airoh (at least the top of the line Aviator 2.3 helmet) is also made in Italy.

I dont wanna knock fox because im sure their helmets are OK.

But stick with people who specialize in things. Fox makes riding gear. Thats their strongpoint. Go with astars or garnae for boots and bell or shoei for helmets.

Bell helmets are made in China by Topkey, the same company that makes Fox helmets.

Would still take a moto 9 flex over any fox helmet any day.

I just checked their website out of curiosity and it is absolutely dreadful looking, looks like it hasn't been touched in 15 years.

For a manufacturer with big names such as Fox and Bell under its belt, it kind of makes you wonder about the overall quality of their products a little bit...Unsure

Can confirm that Airohs are made in Italy. Sometimes the waiting times even for Euros can be drastic.

Any opinions on Lazer helmets? Are they made in China too?

Hey quadz
I would think (maybe wrong) that each brand having the helmets built by Topkey is responsible, or at least specifies, the quality control?

About 9-10 yeara ago a regulation was put in place for helmet manufacturers to carry a minimum $25mil cash bond for liability. This is why helmets have been consolidated to only a few manufacturers. Those who still produce their own, carry their own policies. The rest pooled together to offset the costs involved.

Bell is one the leading designers for Topkey. They license their designs to other brands if they dont make the final cut for Bell production. A lot of helmets you see on the market were Bell designs that they opted to not produce.

I was a part of AXO back in 09-10 when this happened, had a long email conversation with the president of AXO over what to do, ultimately AXO opted to liquidate helmet inventory and not have a helmet line rather than put up $25mil to be able to continue producing helmets.

I recently purchased a new fox V3, within the hour it was returned. One of the cheek pad retainer clips pulled out of the eps liner as I pulled the cheek pad out. Fox was more than happy to replace and so was I. I got to ride with it the other day and it’s a great helmet.

I wouldn't base your assessment of a composite company's products on its website. Not every business relies so heavily on it to get contracts, especially when your main footing is in medical and aviation. BTW, Top Key is in Taiwan, not China. And they are ISO 9001 certified, which is a major quality standard. I don't see any reason to doubt their overall quality, but I agree with OP that we should all be doing a thorough inspection of our new lids.

When profit is held above safety. Really shit of FOX to just ignore the issue. I'm never buying FOX again.
Fox Gear in general is sub-par, i wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I've gone through several pairs of riding pants, jerseys, and gloves the stitching is terrible on their gear, it literally looks like it was done on a home sewing machine, the thread they use is equivalent to thread used to see T-shirts. When they should be using cotton thread/stitching/sewing on crucial areas. I've had gloves that the Velcro has literally fallen off. I've had the stitching come out my jerseys, had lots of loose hanging threads.
Now onto their helmets... they're terrible honestly, where is their Q.C ..... Their sizing is waaay off, I've had this problem with a helmet I bought for myself and my daughter. No matter what I did they never fit right. I've purchased different cheek pads etc. Finally just gave them away for free and went back to Bell and have never looked back.
They are obviously putting their profits above anything else. I mean come on, how long have they been in the moto industry...? Why is it that others in the industry can put out far better quality gear at the around the same price, or substantially s little more. Just don't get it honestly. Only thing I can fathom is, they're are like most companies got so big, they started seeing huge profits, then thought how can me make more, hmm let's scale/cut back on quality by outsourcing.
Another company that is slowly forgetting where they came from, how they got to where they are. At one time in the 90's they had descent gear, now it's just crap!!!

You do know 6d makes kids helmets right? Just came out with ATR2Y this year and both my boys have them. I think there the best but that’s up for debate.
Both my boys are 6 and 8 also. One shell size, two ESP sizes so in theory you could buy a xs and keep moving up in size from same helmet. Helmet can be sent in and looked at after wrecks and either rebuilt or new one purchased at a discount.

It’s all my kids will wear untell someone comes out with what think is a safer helmet for them.
No clue where it’s made but I’m sure it’s china.

The brands design their own helmets, then send the design specs to China. When the shipping containers full of helmets arrive at the dock in Long Beach, the brands have to assume that the Chinese did their due diligence. Obviously, in the case of the OP post, it would appear that helmet slipped through the quality control net in Taiwan.

Doesn't matter where it's made, it's still up to the company selling the product to ensure quality. It's in their best interest to be pulling random samples (depending on the lot size produced) to check quality and ensure the product is made to spec. If not, they are open to complaints/returns and worse yet social media post like this that do more to harm their brand then paying a QA tech to check product quality (or worse yet law suits when the product fails).
